.....in the last say 30-40 years?

The following are mentioned as examples picked at random.

Would Donald Ross like somewhere such as Valhalla or Ferry Point or Shadow Creek or Tralee?
What would Harry Colt think of say Sand Hills or Chambers Bay or The European Cup or The Belfry?
Do you think Alister Mackenzie would like say Wolf Point or Old Head of Kinsale or Loch Lomond?
Would TPC Sawgrass or Cape Kidnappers or Tobacco Road be fine by say Herbert Fowler?

Thoughts? Pick your own combination of ODG architect and modernish course.

They'd likely make a pitch for a total renovation, one that included filling in 'unnecessary' bunkers in the name of cost savings...

I think MacKenzie would have a lot of appreciation for Strantz's body of work. Especially Mikes ability to infuse elements of visual camouflage into his designs and building courses that can often play easier than they may look, well at least on the second playing.

Interesting. I was pondering maybe MacKenzie and Wolf Point, which although I've only seen photos and read and heard comments would seem to have some element of kinship. Width, tacking around features/hazards, surface water management and seemingly quite a few of his 13 points.

Although I omitted it above I was also wondering about James Braid and perhaps Carne?

Not sure about any specific opinions on courses, but I figure they would ask a lot of questions about the modern process, including construction and CAD.  Why assess the results before assessing the paradigm that led to them?

Of your random examples, I'd guess that Herbert Fowler would like Cape Kidnappers; it has lots of greens falling away from the line of play, as he liked to build.

Not to take away from the Christmas spirit or nothing....

But I suspect many of them would disparage them, out of jealousy and the missed opportunity to work on the project themselves.  I suspect it happens plenty now in small private conversations.... I don't see why those guys would be any different...especially the good Dr who regularly kept lubricated and boozed up with truth serum..  ;)

Technology changes, men do not.  And these men who had to move earth and make their art as best they could would seek the best technology possible.  The earthmovers today compared to 1919 can put golf courses on land that they could never deal with before.  The old guard would pull their hair out at the environmental restrictions as well as the restrictions on blasting.  Imagine trying to build Yale today.

Fun topic.
The only way of really finding out a man's true character is to play golf with him. In no other walk of life does the cloven hoof so quickly display itself.

Um, have you seen Dr. MacKenzie's work in California?  ;D

They would likely think them way too short given the club's good players are hitting into the greens.

Long way down in spots. Might have tested Herberts horse riding skills a just a touch while he rode around plotting his routing plan.
