Joel,

I heard 13 million, but who knows what the final number will be.

I thought the Dunes course was a terrific course.

Maybe the first 3 holes were a little repetitious, but redoing the entire course seems pretty extreme.

The final product will be interesting to see.

Will the club want to alter the Shore course once the Dunes course is finished ? ;D

Pat, based on what it looked like in the video, the sand cap material has a much more yellow color to it. The sand they were spreading in the one waste/sandscape area followed by the drawing was much whiter. Also, based on the shape and horizon of it, it doesn't look like a stock pile.

The concept sketch for #13 on the video show a large dune on the left side of the hole, which did not previously exist...

Kyle,

Are you positive that the dune in the picture isn't on the right side of the hole ?

I am.

Watch the video  starting at 1:40 ish.    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DthLWe_r0M

The conceptual sketch shows dunes on both sides to some extent, but more so on the left. And the live footage clearly shows the sand piles predominantly along the left.

Showing the golf course seemed to be an afterthought.  The music was over the top and distracting, there were too many cuts in the video that I didn't have time to look at a golf hole.  The gopro was often times at an odd angle to see golf and it was moving too quickly to take anything in.

Can anyone explain the relationship between Fazio Design and Jackson/Kahn Design.    A $500,000 number was attached to JK as part of the budget.  I am just curious what their part in the project entailed, if anyone knows for sure.   Thanks

I must admit, that 9-16 hole stretch is starting to look mighty fine..

Or is that just Fazio eye-candy?

JWL -

I believe Jackson & Kahn are both former Fazio employees. I don't know how or why they are involved with this project. Perhaps they did the design work in the Fazio office before they left to start their own firm.

It looks & sounds like a 13 year old with a GoPro, drone, IMovie, and a stellar taste in music made the video.

I like the look of the new 4th, with the green sweeping from left to right around a wooded hill. Most of the other changes appear to be more about the aesthetics than the shot values/angles/strategy, but certainly it is WAY too early to see hwat the final product will provide.

Tim Jackson was a design associate for Fazio for a number of years.  He lives in Irvine.  Although he left Fazio a few years ago he is acting as Fazios design associate (really co designer) for MPCC. Pinnacle Golf Design is also involved in landscaping and dune restoration.

I'm told most of the heavy work is completed and the grow in process is now taking place.

How do I know this???   With some of my strong comments, I happened to meet and play golf with Tim Jackson a few weeks ago.  We got off to a rough start as I blasted him before we teed off on the 1st hole (regarding MPCC).  Being the gentleman that he is, he defended himself and Fazio and he talked me through the entire process of MPCC.  He invited me down for a tour which I plan to do shortly.

Just a bump here as I had the fortunate chance to play MPCC Dunes course in the beginning of October when they started to let on average run of mill guests. I have to admit that I really liked it a lot. There are a couple holes I recognized but the renovation I would have to say is a huge success compared to what I can remember of the course from my first visit in 2010.

I'd say the start is moderate, the 3rd hole seems improved and from 4 on out to the beach it really feels like a different course. I would note that after one play I was hardly the expert on remembering the routing in great detail, especially since it was a forest course and a lot of the holes felt similar. Taking out thousands of trees helps, bringing back the native sandy areas definitely helps a lot and as mentioned above 4 kind of played like a reverse Redan but it was quite long 220 yds+ (without checking a scorecard0 and fun to watch the ball funnel down around the corner. 5 a drivable par 3 which was fun, probably a 3 wood for above average hitters as two of us hit over the green albeit one with a lucky bounce out of trouble. There is quite a lot of waste area though most of it is not really in play I'd say unless you get wild. The greens are far more interesting than I remember and the course is in equally perfect condition.

I'd say a huge success and not your average Fazio reno in fact if you didn't know it in advance I'd venture to say there is no way you could guess it would receive that stamp.

I know this is quite a statement but I really think it's my #2 on the Peninsula now.

David,

Does that mean its better than Pebble or CPC?

P.S.  I love this comment:  "5 a drivable par 3 which was fun"...  I would certainly hope every par 3 is driveable! :)

My bad Kalen, that's a par 4....it was a typo.

As to the other question, Cypress is my favorite course on the planet. ;-)

I'm surprised it's not getting more PR or buzz?

Two members that I spoke with both love it mainly because of the eye candy.  Apparently it's visually striking.

A Cypress Club member played it last month and said he had mixed feelings.  Some of the greens are borderline unfair because of the slope?

I played the Dunes in the spring of 2015, shortly before it closed for the renovation work. The routing and the sites of the tees and greens are pretty much the same. Some of the new greens are much larger than they were. I thought the lacey edges on some of the bunkering was a bit overwrought.

There are several dune ridges that were created that are still pretty much open sand. Once the fescue grows in, the course will look much better.

Be aware that most of the design work was actually done by Jackson-Kahn Design, alums of the Fazio firm.

Kalen,

I've heard plenty of people say Pebble was the best course on the planet but in the end it all depends on what their standard for comparison is. If they played Cypress and MPCC etc and they still say that then great. I'm more of the opinion that 6 or 7 excellent holes is not enough anymore on the Peninsula to be in the top 2. I feel Pebble is overrated but that's just my opinion.[/size]
