Torrey Pines North reopens
« on: November 29, 2016, 08:09:37 PM »
The North Corse at TP has reopened. The work by Weiskopf has been well received. I had a sneak peak while playing the South today and it looks good. Just checking the redesigned 9th green, the nines have been flipped, the design seems sound with some good upper shelfs on the flanks. The bunkers have a flashed sand look to contrast with the berm style bunkers on the South. The tie in work around the greens is very impressive, it seems that the green has been there for years; a huge improvement over the South redesign. They used Kikuyu so I'm wondering how that will affect balls trying to bounce on the green.

Pete,
I played TPN last Monday. Greens rolled very true. Few pitch marks, but that will change. Very good construction work. Will play again in couple weeks and give the design a closer look. Fairways were not rolling out but, as the grasses mature and the super can drop the HOC, conditions will improve. Greens (007 bent?) are excellent so soon after grow-in.

Were there any substantive design changes? Beyond bunker aesthetics and green enlargement?

12 Million dollars ought to be enough for a course at least the equal to the South (take from that what you will).

I wonder if 12 million dollars was a lot for new irrigation system, new greens, and new tees. I guess it had to do with buying sod instead of growing in the greens. Does 12 million seem high for a renovation? What was the most costly part of this renovation? I would say that it was in California which contributed to the high cost.
