Mesquite in Palm Springs is on the ropes.  I heard Marshallia Ranch was bought by new owners (same ones that purchased La Purisima) but that is only info I have heard secondhand.

I thought that was the case but someone on staff at La Purisima told me their new owner/s also purchased Marshallia.  I internally raised an eyebrow at the comment when he told me that.  I'm way more inclined to agree with you.

Roddy Ranch was pretty good, especially for the price.


Lost Canyons had its moments, but they probably good have done better with that location, as well as they people who did Malibu and Robinson Ranch, who also had nice grounds for golf--all of them a bit hilly, but not as difficult as what the Cascades people had to work with.


Empire Lakes was decent golf, but nothing interesting architecturally. You won't find many defenders of Cypress here--Doak gave it a zero in the earlier edition of Confidential Guide--but it was definitely something different than could be found in the LA area at the time--a change of pace.

The local couple who bought the Fallbrook land will turn it into a winery and vineyard. Here's a story from the San Diego Union Tribune:

I will miss the place. It would not get high marks here, but it had some positives: a few quirks (I can think of two fairways with portions of hillsides left in their natural state) and an above-average back nine (a better experience than the front in terms of both golf and scenery). The houses on the modest valley heights were unobtrusive.

There was talk in the summer that one of the nines would be preserved, but that appears to be off the table now.

Highly doubtful, the economics of water pricing and delivery in California has changed forever. 

The forced conservation has resulted in many of the water districts to suffer substantial decreases in revenue, "forcing" them to increase prices (most water districts have very little variable costs so when deliveries/revenues decrease, they don't see a corresponding decrease in costs, hence they need to raise the price to maintain an overall revenue level than equals or exceeds costs).

As we all know with taxes, once the prices has been increased, highly doubtful they will ever be decreased to a level that is suitable for high volume users.

Unless a course has access to reclaimed water or their own water source, purchasing fresh water will continue to be expensive.

The La P owners purchased Village Country Club, also in Lompoc.

El Rancho Verde in Rialto closed in 2011.  Shot way over my head there (for my ability at the time) in a college tournament when I was at UC Riverside in 1995.

Robinson Ranch is a temporary closure due to recent fires that broke out nearby. They were in the midst of re-tooling their 36H facility into an 18H one--and now are completely renovating the golf course and clubhouse. The website says they are scheduled to re-open in early spring of 2017.
