Wow both depicted holes switching the location of the hazards protecting the green (ie #4 right handed players currently approach with a draw and changing to a fade).

Also liked the audible laugh from Hanse and weird look over from Pashley at the end of the video when talking about the short course (starting in June and opening in the Fall).  Although it doesn't much sound like a short course but instead a short game practice facility.

Is Kyle Franz doing the work on 3 & 5?  He is still making changes at Pine Needles, and they look really good as well.

Pinehurst reveals routing for 9-hole short course by Hanse. Course will be built on 10 acres that formerly occupied the first holes of No. 3 and No. 5 courses.

.
Kyle is splitting his time between  Pinehurst and PN.. He is Gil's front man at Pinehurst overseeing some bunker work on #3. At PN he has a couple of shapers adding a number of new tee boxes.

I am not able to get my hands around the big picture idea at Pinehurst No.3, 4 & 5 that Hanse & Franz are doing.  It seems like these are brand new holes, rather than an effort at "interpretative restoration" in contrast to C & C at P#2.

On #s 3&5 both 1st holes are being eliminated to make room for the par 3 course. The first hole on #3 is being flipped to make a new 1st hole for #5. On #3 the former third hole will be the new 1st hole and 2 par 4s are being shortened and land behind them will make room for two new par 3s, making it I believe a par 68. As for #4 Gil has free reign to build his own course, with no requirement to retain current corridors.

Greg,

Kye Goalby did the work on no. 3 and no. 5, building five new holes to make up for the two being lost to make way for the short course. He and I also worked on bunker restoration of course 3, restoring bunkers on holes 2, 5, 8, 14, and 15.  We left in late February and from there Kyle Franz was wrapping up at Pine Needles and took over the restoration efforts, planning to finish the remaining ~9 holes that need work this spring.

Carl,

What Kye did on no. 3 was not restorative, but certainly sympathetic to the style that was once there and is similar with no. 2.  With the bunker restoration work, any time a bunker could go back to where it originally was, we did it/are doing it.  Condos, shrinking of corridors, and course 5 having some of the original course 3 holes, limits some of that work, so there's improvisation.

Ben,

I do not believe that is any tree removal planned for Pine Needles. From what I understand, there was some planned, but there was an environmental issue relating to a bird species that was located on the property, and that put a stop to it. There's one hole that I believe we'd agree on the needs some trees removed for both agronomic and playability reasons, #17, and I believe that this hole has the highest number of these birds and is the one being most closely watched.

For what it's worth, a number of trees that blocked the sun around some of the greens were removed in anticipation of the resurfacing this past summer. #2 and #18 jump out at me now, but I'm sure there were others as well.

David,

Thanks for the informative post.  #1, #2, and #17 always popped out in my mind as needing much more sunlight.
