2017 5th Major at Dismal River
« on: November 07, 2016, 12:44:36 PM »

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is my pleasure to invite you to play in the 2017 5th Major Championship, June 22-25, at Dismal River Golf Club in Mullen, NE. This will be the 18th playing of the tournament (our 7th year at Dismal!) and I look forward to seeing everyone again as well as those who haven't yet been to the sandhills. I was out just a month ago and am happy to report that both courses were in the best condition they've ever been in. Sadly, my game was not.

So bring a friend or your favorite foursome. This is a team event but don't hesitate to come alone as we've paired intrepid travelers in the past that have gone on to win the thing. Hopefully we'll see last year's champs, Baha Demirorz and Lee Nelson, returning to defend their title. These gents won the playoff playing out of the 7th Flight!

I can’t thank the club enough for continuing to allow me to host this event. It is the highlight of my golf calendar and I know many of you feel the same. We'll have a full house, so don't drag your feet, sign up online at 5thmajor.com. A $100 deposit is required to hold your reservation.

DATES: June 22-25

FORMAT: Fourball. Teams will play three 18 hole matches, scoring the matches by holes Won (1), Lost (0), or Tied (1/2). The team accumulating the most total points in each flight wins the flight and advances to the playoff with the other flight winners.

COST: $1,195 per person includes: 3 days of unlimited golf, 3 nights accommodation in the onsite cabins, all meals to include Dinner on Thursday, Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner on Friday, Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner on Saturday and Breakfast on Sunday. Also includes all taxes and gratuities for the package.

Evan,

Yes. Once the club has received your deposit, you will be officially registered to play in a major. Good luck.

Last call: If there are four intrepid travelers out there looking to visit the sand hills of Nebraska this summer, this Bud's for you.

I need to get back out there to enjoy the beauty that is everywhere, unfortunately it will not be this year, hopefully next year.  To those going, enjoy.  To those thinking of going, go.  Josh

Just 5 more weeks until ....

There's been a last minute cancellation so we're a team short which throws off my match play brackets. Anyone interested in playing 3 days at Dismal River in a couple of weeks? Details in the opening post.

If you are flying out of Omaha on Sunday afternoon, any chance that I could share a ride?
I would buy lunch and share the gas.

On Wednesday, June 21, I drop my wife at North Platte airport (after a couple days at Ballyneal) around 11 a.m., CDT.  If anybody is coming in that way, I'm happy to take them up to Dismal around then.  On Sunday, June 25, I'll leave Dismal around 1:00 p.m., MDT enroute to DIA, ETA 6:00 p.m., MDT.  I can offer a ride in that direction as well.  Looking forward....

Bumping this thread, as the time is getting closer...

Just re-read the 2016 thread. I am looking forward to seeing some old and new friends in ten days.

Question re:transportation - would you recommend coming in thru the sand roads if I am renting a small sedan, or just suck it up and take the paved trail thru N. Platte?

Dave,

The forecast calls for dry weather up through next Thursday so taking a sedan down Soddy Rd will be fine. I'm going out this weekend and will let you know if anything changes.

See you soon!

Eric,
My Navigation has me taking 97N out of N. Platte, then 92 to Soddy Rd to Dismal.
Claims to be 30 min quicker than 97 up towards Mullin.
Does that sound correct to you?   I'll be spending Wednesday night in N. Platte

I'm not sure there is all that much difference time wise coming up from N. Platte. I'm usually coming in from the west so the shortcut over Lake McConaughy to Arthur to Soddy Rd definitely shaves off 30 minutes. Probably 45 minutes.

I must say that all of these drives are more fun in a car with a little extra pep. ;)

Right on, Eric.  The key to Soddy is to keep your speed up on the sandier track, and certainly never stop for those dumb cows.

Chris Johnston tells the story of a car of pilgrims who stopped for cows while heading in on Soddy.  The cows refused to move; clearly, the pilgrims were far too respectful of next season's steaks and never pushed forward.  Since the cows wouldn't move, the pilgrims turned around, backtracked to the highway, and drove in from 97.  Must have shaved nine holes off their visit.

I'm sorry but as guests in the Sand Hills our primary responsibility is to respect the ranchers and their cattle. Hopefully the new owners of Dismal will once again hire local people who can educate you on their beautiful and important way of life. Smooth sailing to the Scottsdale douche bags.

Love hearing that story, JC.

My dad is in the cattle business (red angus, much like the black you see in the sand hills) so I'm always happy to drive through the herds on Soddy Road.

Here's a short clip I took driving through them last fall:

JK,

This is just terrific, you respect them so much you want them on your plate and as shoes, belts, jackets, etc.

Reminds me of the quote from Fury:

Kalen,

I will always cherish the time I spent with the local ranchers and their families. Before then I didn't understand that driving up the cost of land was a bad thing for the young ranchers wanting to build their own future. I thought one less cow wasn't that big of a deal, I thought just because we were spending money we were a good thing. The Sand Hills is not the set of WestWorld. The least we can do is leave the livestock alone.

JK,

As an occasional beef eater myself, I'm totally down with preserving the ranching lifestyle and all that the comes with it. But if you asked the cows if they were being "respected" given their ultimate plight...I think they would give a different answer...  ;)

P.S.  Loved the WestWorld series reboot, terrific show as a thought experiment on our own humanity...

Here is an easy to read article explaining why we don't want our cows stressed out. Don't honk at what you eat.

Douchebag. Singular. I live in Scottsdale, my partner does not.

But thanks for the well wishes. I look forward to meeting you, assuming we did not meet before.
