CC Virginia this week on Champs Tour-Flynn restored by George
« on: November 02, 2016, 07:11:48 PM »
Is the course on tap for this week's Dominion Classic, on the PGA Tour Champions, the Flynn course that was restored by Lester George about a decade ago? If so, let's start the conversation.

I went out there today. I think that the routing is decent, but the holes are noticeably weaker after 10. 16 would be even better if they removed that bunker in front of the green.

I thought, but wanted to make sure, that the new Confidential Guide attributed the design to Fred Findlay.

They have a number of courses on the property. There is a quick link here: http://www.theccv.org/course-history

This course, the James River, is a Flynn design but here's the missing link: 1992 renovation by Rees Jones. The Lester George work came a decade later, which makes one wonder what they did and didn't like from their decision to renovate Flynn's work. Perhaps that affection for water and sand that swept the nation in the 1980s and 1990s?

The other two courses, the Tuckahoe Creek (1988, Joe Lee) and Westhamption (1910, Barker, then Ross, then George), give the club 45 holes from which to choose. If we're fortunate, Lester will catch wind of this thread and he might give us a bit of an update on his work on 27 of the club's holes.

There's no evidence that the James River course was a Flynn design. Flynn's drawings for the course didn't match what was built; the course was designed by Fred Findlay.

CCV has 54 holes in two locations. The Westhampton course is at the main clubhouse and the Creek and River Courses are down River Road a couple of miles away. I was out there on Friday and it was a very pleasant day.

Why do they choose to mention Flynn on their site, aside from obvious reasons?

I don't know what the obvious reason would be. Another course in VA was actually designed by Flynn but the club somehow came to believe it was designed by Donald Ross and when presented with evidence refused to change their view. The website still refers to the course as Ross's. Perhaps it's either too embarrassing to change or just pride of association. Ross is better known than Flynn and Flynn has a more impressive portfolio than Findlay.
