SC golf question
« on: October 31, 2016, 12:36:17 PM »
Next Friday (11/4), I'll be driving thru SC on my way to Charleston for a Saturday wedding.  I don't need to be in Charleston before about 6 pm on Friday evening, and thought I might stop and play an early afternoon round somewhere in between Augusta and Charleston.

I'm not really looking for a "Top 100" course; if I want that, I'll leave a little earlier in the morning and go to Caledonia and then head south.  I'm much more interested in the "hidden gem" type of public course.

Thoughts?

Orangeburg CC-Also private but I would imagine welcoming with a nice request. 1963 Ellis Maples design with plenty of fun included.

Have you played Aiken Golf Club?   Highly recommended and dirt cheap.

If you have time in Charleston pre or post wedding I would check out the Charleston Muni. Fun, classic little muni just outside of downtown that supposedly Raynor assisted in design/construction.

I'd highly recommend Aiken, as well.   Terrific greens that were likely re-built by Donald Ross at some point around 1930.

AG - Aiken Golf Club is a great suggestion, as is Orangeburg Country Club. OCC is sort of semi-private and will definitely welcome you.

Ben - Spartanburg CC is a wonderful course, but on the opposite side of the state from Augusta... traveling there would add about 250-300 miles to AG's trip!  :o

You could also try Linrick GC, just a few miles north of Columbia. Par 73 with a few decent holes and fairly easy to walk. The course has a super tough stretch of holes on the back 9 (14, 15, 16 and 17).
Best Played So Far This Season:
Crystal Downs CC (MI), The Bridge (NY), Canterbury GC (OH), Lakota Links (CO), Montauk Downs (NY), Sedge Valley (WI)

Mike,

I played Spartanburg and Sweetens cove on the same day a few years back. Drove through a couple national parks.  It was good for the soul.  I thought this site is for hardcore folks?

Fort Jackson in Columbia has a nice 36 holes that I think is open to the public.

Nothing that compares to Aiken GC or Orangeburg.

I don't think that the Fort Jackson courses are open to the public at all. It's a really busy place, big base a lot of retirees there as well.

Ben,
I left Durham at 4:30 am on Tuesday so that I could stop and play at Arrowhead Pointe on my way to Atlanta.  Now it's 5:06 am on Friday, and I'm about to get in the car so that I can stop at Aiken on the way to a wedding rehearsal in Charleston.  If I'm late to that rehearsal, my wife will NOT divorce me; she will kill me!

So I'll claim "hardcore" for this particular trip, I think.  :)

Thanks all for the suggestions.  I spoke with the folks at Aiken, and they're going to work me in whenever I arrive on their doorstep.

Bill,
Aiken was just terrific; great call.

I drove in a few minutes before 9 am, paid $25 (Friday walking rate) and was back in the car by 12:30.  Got paired up (instantly!) with two really nice guys and had a great time in every respect.  Except the part where I got my butt kicked at 5800 yds...

Great golf course; I see why so many of you have always been so high on it.  My friend Bill Bergin, a great GCA, told me once that he wanted everybody that came off of one of his golf courses, be they scratch or a 20 handicapper, to say "That was really fun!  And NEXT time, I'll shoot a much better score!"  That was Aiken.

A particular favorite was the 15th green; I've never seen anything quite like it.  Probably 20-25 yds. deep and not especially wide, but with a shelf that runs vertically to the line of play down the middle of the green over to the right edge until about 10' from the back.  Just cool...

I learned early on in the round that when the guys I was with said something like "Keep it to the left here" (as they did and I didn't on #2) to listen carefully.  If you don't know where to hit the ball, or if you can't hit it where you are looking that day, it'll eat you up.

One final note:  If you start at the clubhouse and end at the clubhouse, the uphill walks have to equal the downhill walks, right?  And so they do at Aiken, except that you get ALL of the downhill on two holes, especially #17.  Other than that, I've never walked up so many steep hills to so many greens in my life, even in the mountains, which Aiken decidedly isn't!

Just a blast to play; thanks again for the recommendation.

(And btw, the round before Aiken was at Arrowhead Pointe in GA, now the #6 muni in the country.  My next two rounds are at Pinehurst #2, which I've never played, and Peachtree, which I've only played once.  Not a bad run, right?)

Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken is great

http://www.palmettogolfclub.net/index.html

I heard that, of course, and would love to see it someday.  But I don't think you can drive up, pay $25, and be playing golf ten minutes later...

Glad you had a good trip.  How were the conditions at Arrowhead Pointe?  It's been a few years since I have played it and have heard mixed things about conditioning.  Love the layout!

Mark,
Arrowhead Pointe was in very good shape, especially considering the severe drought conditions in N. Georgia.  The greens were a little bit slow, which I completely understand for a Tuesday in very, very dry weather.  I can't overstate the drought; many (if not most?) courses in the Atlanta area have gone to cartpath-only because of the conditions.

But I have to say that I've been there 5 or 6 times now, beginning back when the course first opened, and I've never seen it NOT in good condition tee to green.  I'd guess that any complaints about it would be lack of pace on the champion bermuda greens, which in turn tends to make the influence of grain excessive; lots of people do not accept that very well.  That said, the green speeds at Arrowhead are in line with what I found at most public courses with any of the hybrids; they just don't have the budget/staff to maintain the sort of speeds you'd see at a private club.  And that's ok.
