The infallible moderns
« on: October 27, 2016, 09:22:06 PM »
There should be ten but I can only come up with:

1. Sand Hills
2. Pacific Dunes
3. Friars Head
4. The Golf Club

Where else can we go, Shadow Creek, Muirfield Village, That island green for shit course in Jacksonville, Kingsbarns, Trump something or other....what am I missing?

Ballyneal
Sebonack
Kiawah Ocean

Personally, I'd add Wade Hampton and Muirfield Village, but I doubt those gain consensus here.
New for '24: Monifieth x2, Montrose x2, Panmure, Carnoustie x3, Scotscraig, Kingsbarns, Elie, Dumbarnie, Lundin, Belvedere, The Loop x2, Forest Dunes, Arcadia Bluffs x2, Kapalua Plantation, Windsong Farm, Minikahda...

John, I'd stop at your first 3.  Maybe--if you give it time and go outside the US--Cabot Cliffs.

I haven't seen any of these courses but I'd stop at the first three also. They appear here to stay no matter how much tastes and trends alter over the next 50 years.

Closest we get in the UK is Kingsbarns. Castle Stuart may get there eventually.

Not surprising that every living architect with the exception of Doak and Coore have been dismissed by the "Play the Top 100" crowd.

I'd think you could add either Harbor Town or Whistling Straits.  I'd also add Diamante Dunes.

In the world? No less than 101. Great thing about a classic it can be 6000 yds, skipped by the PTTC crowd and still be infallible. A modern needs both length and media confirmation.

Put the Wade Hampton routing, flow, repeated raised tee - low fairway mantra on another piece of property...

It looks like it should have a neighborhood encroaching on it, with a grill(e) room that serves fish tacos with a ramekin of orange remoulade, and a wine room behind glass you can see (but can't touch) when you walk in.

No blahzio's - please.

John, how do you define an "infallible" golf course?  Why should there be 10?

+1 John please give us your definition of infallible! Pete Dye, Doak and C&C?

What about Kingsley Club? What about Queenwood? Maybe The European Club, Diamante Dunes, All other Bandon courses, Gamble Sands (though I've not been yet), Shanqin Bay, Tara Iti (not been yet), Cape Kidnappers (not been yet), Wolf Point.

Just to name a few.

I keep slipping!  Darn it.  I forgot we are not allowed to like Fazio courses on GCA.  I also failed to realize that the F&B operation impacted the quality of a golf course.  The only thing I ate last time I was at Wade Hampton was a ham sandwich on white bread at the turn house.

You also aren't allowed to like fish tacos. Street tacos are iffy too.

Don't forget to add the newest rule:  GCA members wishing to remain in good standing shall refrain from using the term "green complex."

I hate to do it, but I'd strike Dismal Red and Bandon Trails. Dismal for that whole walking thing (I have no problem with it but it falls out of infallibility) and BT for the 14th hole (which, again I think is a net positive on my favorite course on the property, but some have legit criticism for it being too difficult).

How about Kingsbarns? Haven't played it but looks lovely! Same goes for Cape Kidnappers.

Why the disdain for fish tacos?

Old Tom Morris didn't need fish tacos served in the grille room.
