Valderrama II
« on: October 08, 2016, 08:31:21 AM »
Not sure I've seen this anywhere before but forgive me if already discussed.  There's a piece in today's Daily Telegraph property section about a new uber exclusive development by the new owners of Valderrama dubbed Valderrama II. It's going to consist of top end housing, hotel and a new golf course 'they want to be the best in the world. They are currently calling on golf designers including Gil Hanse, Tom Doak and Ben Crenshaw to come up with ideas'.

Valderrama and Sotogrande are already pleasant tracks but I would ask the new designers to keep the cork trees off the middle of the fairways this time.

Does anyone have any more insight on this one?

I went to read the article to see if the part about who they were calling was a direct quote.  It's not.

It's a direct quote from the article Tom, but not the developer.

Yes but if it had been in quotes, I could have called the developer a liar, since they have not contacted me.

As it stands, the writer is just allowing the developer to test-market a bunch of people's names for free, without attribution.

Well, I quite like the idea of you designing the best course on the planet and it being but a short flight away from my home and in a warm place for year round play. You've got my vote, for what that's worth (not much I'm afraid).

Note at the bottom of that it says that they, not the Valderrama members plan to move ahead with the "Valderrama II" project.

I always find it rather humorous when they claim to build the #1 course in the world. I met the owner of Valley near Munich and in talking to him it's crystal clear that he built there the #1 course in the world.

It's a Doak 5 at best.

I had forgotten about this thread.  Quite the coincidence for it to come up again today, what with me in Spain.

Given that Valderrama 1 is surrounded by housing, if it’s to be part of the same course/complex where would No II fit? Or is it just a working title for something else to be situated somewhere nearby?

The site is a couple of miles from the existing Valderrama course at Castellar de la Frontera. Nice piece of ground, good undulation, lovely old cork oaks. 'Real Spain' kinda feel, pretty different from the Costa.
