If you read the entire rant, it's quite humorous, if taken with a grain of salt.
No doubt it's affected the Euros far more.

Unlike Phil, who seems determined to insult, blame, step on, and hurt every past USA Captain out there.
Fortunately Phil never played for Mr. Palmer.

How could we ever consider Phil for Captain given his complete and consistent lack of judgement, timing, and ,,,errr,,....
record.
He did sincerely apologize, but once something like that's out there, it's out there, and Sutton was quite hurt, as was Watson.

Funny, Phil being forced to play Tiger's ball in 2004 doesn't explain his fourball loss or his drubbing in singles at the hands of Sergio.......

Team USA continues the drama and making all the wrong moves.
"The best golf team ever assembled" ?  (loved Rory's "best task force" comeback)
maybe the best 2-8 team ever assembled...
#7 player in the world not on the team allegedly due to attitude, but as a Vice captain?
Fowler should've been left on the outside looking in as Bubba's a better player and Rickie's a better ....err....water boy, but I guess it takes a different kind've boy to get on the mean (or is it back) side.
Moore was the correct final choice, but Bubba should've already been on the team.

This whole deal with the wives and girlfriends has always bothered me. Reminds me of John Daly and some wife of his wearing the same pants and skirt pattern . If the NFL put wives in the team area on the sidelines people would freak out.

Perhaps in his next column he will address the inept captaincy of Darren Clarke, whatever tomorrow's final day may bring.
Two captains picks on individuals showing NO form all year inWestwood and Kaymer the former where clearly friendship clouded judgement.....he should have been a vice captain for his "experience" not playing at such a poor level relative to that required for thus event.

Two players who actually qualified over the course of really THIS years performances,Fitzpatrick and Wood get a combo nude two matches out of the first two days, yet his picks combine for an 0-5 record over that same period.
Yep that's 5 of the current 9.5 points the USA have!!!!!

But wait he only trusts Fitzpatrick to one match, yet considers himself reliable to be the last man should the tie come down to the last game????????

Clearly I would have flunked Captsin school?
Faldo was crucified for his captaincy when he lost, but my guess Clarkes inept performance will be overlooked

I have been there the last two days and Willett's description of American fans seems on the mark.  99% of it is fun but when Willett hit it near the concession stand on 6 it was pretty ugly.

The course has been a fun one for this event.  Almost no rough and playing a little soft.

The flipside is that he doesn't trust Fitzpatrick and is hoping it won't come down to the final match. You should always put your best players out first.  It's like baseball managers who save their closers in extra inning games.  We put one of your key players in a match that may not count?

Is Pieters as good as he looked this week?  Or is he Dubuisson part 2 (at least so far), a guy who comes out of nowhere (as far as most casual golf fans are concerned), looks absolutely unbeatable for a weekend, then promptly goes back to nowhere?

Edited to add: Now that I look into it, turns out Pieters had a pretty stellar college career, of which I should have known, considering I have a degree from Illinois.

I have to agree, Jason. On Saturday I was embarrassed numerous times by the boorish comments of a few of the spectators. Most behaved themselves, but the loudmouthed douchebags have a way of tainting everything.

I had a very bad feeling when the Euros pulled the North Dakota heckler out of the stands to make a putt during the practice rounds, and he became an instant celebrity. That never should have happened, and I think it has emboldened too many like-minded blowhards to inject themselves into the action.

Heckling morons are a worldwide phenomenon. It's the occasional intersection of the surgical suite quiet crowd with the football/hockey/soccer crowd that makes it stands out. Even a few drunk rubes can be tolerated in the gentleman's game.

Terry, you hit one off the hosel when you included rugby in the above.  I've been to countless rugby matches including the past two World Cups (NZ and England/Wales) and fan behavior is top-shelf.

Sure, but 50,000 people screaming, cheering & yelling as one creates a white noise that is quite different to one fuckwit screaming out to break the silence as a golfer prepares to hit, or even worse, begins his downswing.

Guys in the crowd serenading McIlroy with a rendition of 'Sweet Caroline' is one thing, someone shouting "Suck a dick Rory" is quite another. That was what prompted McIlroy to get a specatator thrown out on Saturday during the afternoon four balls.

Every professional golf tournament I've ever been to has had at least a few yahoos yelling super inappropriate things at times. Sometimes it's just annoying (Mashed potatoes!), sometimes it's pretty awkward/offensive (Hey Phil, are those A-cups?), and it always feels out of place. I think the Ryder Cup just brings more of that type of person out of the woodwork. When you add to the mix guys like Rory and Sergio egging them on, it makes for a combustible combination.

Having said that, I loved the way team Europe handled it in the post-match interview, giving credit to the american players, caddies, etc., for doing all they could to police it. I also had to respect how Rory and Sergio used the hostile crowd to boost their games, rather than wilting like Monty did years ago.

An event like the Ryder Cup is always going to bring a large percentage of non-golf fans into the crowd, people who are used to heckling pitchers at baseballs games or taunting the opposing team at basketball games. It's too bad golf tourneys can't screen that out, but it was nice to see the majority of the fans helping point out the offending individuals to get them removed.

The real shame about the brother's comments is that he truly affected Willet's Ryder Cup experience. Whether unwittingly or not the brother gets an F on his Ryder Cup contribution. If there is any question the way Willet felt about the week then go to the Euro press conference. I instantly became a fan as he was able to laugh at both the situation and himself.

I do think too many fans crossed the line this week--consider the crazy thing said to McIlroy, shouts of "you suck" to Garcia, and even the poor treatment of U.S. vice captains Watson and Lehman when they tried to tell spectators to cool it.  It's unfortunate because I appreciate the unique atmosphere of the Ryder Cup, but it shouldn't become a license to act like an idiot with no sense of decorum or perspective.  It's becoming a little too belligerent and bellicose for me and I've always been a huge fan of the Ryder Cup.  Why are people so angry?  The fact that this happened in Minnesota is embarrassing to me as a native Midwesterner.  Hopefully this was a one-off and not the start of a trend.

It happens because we try to force the growth of the game and therefore there is a large casual element being pushed into a game that is not meant for such....however, I liked the overall atmosphere and Patrick Reed/Rory

Well Willett frère was probably right but he shouldn't have said it. Boisterous fans are fine, but some of the fans stepped way across the line. Rory was spoken to in terms that encouraged him to invite one so-called fan to back up his words on Friday, and to his credit Dru Love had the fan booted out.

As for Clarke, I knew him once, and even played on a team with him, as I also come from Dungannon in NI, and I am sure he would acknowledge that mistakes were made. At one point yesterday,. I thought Europe had a chance, but then there was a short period staying with Rose missing on the 18th where several decent possibilities vanished and momentum shifted back.

Before the Medinah RV, someone said that whatever happens, the winning captain will get tok much credit and the losing one too much blame. At Medinah on Saturday evening JMO was an idiot who had blown it but by the following evening he was a genius. Both were probably exaggerations.

I was at the Ryder Cup this past Friday and Sunday. Frankly, I was surprised to hear all of the negative press on the fans after Saturday as from what I saw on Friday everyone was generally behaved. Danny Willett certainly received a few comments on Friday afternoon regarding his brother but he must of been expecting that?

It sounds like there were a few drunk idiots on Saturday that spoiled the pot. It seemed like yesterday everyone was actively trying to be on their best behavior and I didn't hear a single negative cheer or chant.

If the sportswriters think it was bad this year, in Minnesota, it's going to be a complete circus in eight years at Bethpage.
