If Thompson designed a golf course in or near NYC would he be the most discussed architect on GCA?

Tom,

Off the top of my head, I have to say it would be dependent on the usual factors: topography, soil conditions, construction budget, amount of time Thompson spent on-site during construction, quality of the contractors work, etc.

In other words, while Capilano, Jasper, Banff, St. George's, Westmount, and Highlands Links are all monuments to Thompson's brilliance, there are also many more mediocre layouts here, in Canada, attributed to him.

Those comparatively inferior designs can be attributed to 1)less interesting ground to start with, 2) poor soil conditions, 3) not enough money to spend on construction details, 4) Thompson not spending enough time on-site during construction, 5) a poor quality of construction/detail work, etc.

So, as interesting as it is, your question is speculative. Hard to say.
