Isle of Harris Golf Club: Scarista Links Golf Course
« on: September 23, 2017, 09:48:29 AM »
Any of you vagabonds visited Isle of Harris Golf Club... maybe while on a visit to Askernish?

What I have read about the course/area seems very special... magical!

Any first hand experiences?

I played there on my last trip to Askernish, 3-4 years ago ... just in time to sneak a review into volume 1 of The Confidential Guide.

It's a lovely spot [the whole island is] and like Askernish, they depend on a certain amount of visitor revenue to keep the place going, so I would recommend it to anyone who can get there.

There are only nine holes and not many of them are as good or as natural as the best of Askernish.  I wished I could have mowed out a few holes further down the coast to the south.

I played there two years ago on my first swing through the Uists and Lewis and Harris.  Spectacular scenery, some holes with a lot of potential.  I remember a longish par 3 in the vicinity of 200 yards with a green the size of a largish table but shaped like a slice of pizza.  The closing hole is a short uphill par 5 with an interesting third shot. Well, interesting for a short hitter like me.  It's well
worth playing if you are in the area, but you won't be playing on Sunday.

I took a picture a half mile down the coast towards Taransay and had it enlarged and it hangs on the wall of my living room.  All the credit goes to Mom Nature for creating the spot rather than to my meager talents as a photographer.
Some days you play golf, some days you find things.

I'm not really registered, but I couldn't find a symbol for certifiable.

I'm going with some friends next summer, thanks to Ran's review / honeymoon tale.

Also, my sister in London is coming for a visit next week and is bringing me a couple of bottles of Isle of Harris Gin!

I am a Life Member at Isle of Harris GC and last played there in the LM Tournament and then the Open in August 2016. I am currently arranging my trip for August 2018.

It is a great place to play and with the sun out, magical. The weather can be a bit severe - we played in some tough conditions last year - but that is all part of the fun. I once made a calendar from some photos of courses I had played in the year, and I was asked of the Harris photo -' I thought you went to Scotland, not the West Indies?'

If you get the chance, make the trip. I have played Askernish twice and it can be brutal if you do not keep the ball on the fairway. I hit a ball last year as a lay up, into the wind, at a mark just of the fairway. I hit it exactly to the spot and it went 2 inches into the 2 inch deep grass. I stood over it and could not see it. That is tough. That said, with the wind I did manage to play the last 5 quite well !
