I am cleaning up my cupboard and don't know where to sell the books I want to loose. Is anyone of you interested in following:

B. von Limburger was the greatest German golf course Architect. He wrote quite a bit (for a german)...


Unser Golf is a book with short stories about golf, first steps of golf in germany, first clubs in germany, golf portraits of bobby jones, jack nicklaus etc.

You may have driven by one of his courses without knowing it  :)


Baron Von Limburger designed the Dufferin course at Clandeboye which is between Bangor and Newtownards (County Down). I know nothing more about him than that. I've heard it's quite a decent course.

I have only played one so far:  Club Zur Vahr in Bremen.  It was very different.  Some open holes, and some very narrow holes through trees.  One hole had alternate fairways across maybe 75 yards of width, and the next the fairway might be 20 yards across.  It is a pretty flat site, so not as good a course as I'd visualized from looking at the diagram in The World Atlas of Golf, but it was definitely interesting and I hope to see more of his work next year [or even this fall].

I would describe his courses as strategic but with narrow fairways - although I am experiencing them now 30+ years later than they were built. I know that the holes were more open and therefore with more options back in the days. Most of the courses in Germany were built by Limmy and he did a good job with finding holes in the landscapes. I think a lot of the courses need some manicure and pedicure to get back to their best form.

I have the 11th edition (1970) of his pamphlet/booklet "Was ist Golf?" (What is Golf?). Its 28 pp contain text, vintage ads, a routing of Land- und Golf Club Düsseldorf and three maps showing courses in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Two ads list his designs and those of Kurt Peters.
