I don't understand the connector comments when there is a long walk to the next tee.

So far as the 3s go at Merion...13 is not of the same class as 3 or 9.  I don't think its a brilliant hole by any stretch of the imagination, but it is good and can cause grief.

Ciao

Could be a different thread altogether.

I don't think that "connector" implies proximity in the slightest. 13 serves to connect the three-hole stretch of 10-12 to the closing stretch of 14-18. I think you understood that from the beginning and were fishing for some type of reaction.

What makes 3 and 9 better holes than 13? Every pin position on 13 is accessible from the tee ball. Can't say the same for 3 and 9. In my mind, the 3rd green is too sloped and loses nearly 50% of its surface area due to that slope. #9 has a back-left tongue that is inaccessible from the tee and a very sadistic place to locate a hole. Come to think of it, #17 is also a shrew. Merion NEEDS #13 to keep golfers sane.

Has the word "inchoate" been used in the 20 years or so of GCA's existence? Thank you, VK, for that spicing-up.

the green looks intimidating when your driving into the club

yet since it's a short hole, the intimidation is only eye candy

the 2 holes by the clubhouse and abutted by the road, 1 and 13, are the easiest on the course
It's all about the golf!

I would disagree with your conception of connector hole.  It is a term usually used to refer to a hole which connects two bits of a course over rough, harsh, elevation change or even dull terrain.  The hole may not be ideal (but sometimes these can be great holes), but it does a job.

My probing is pointed at the idea of connector as somehow fitting as way to for 1-12 to be introduced to 14-18. I don't understand why this is the case.  The hole just seems a standard, short par 3 which uses a no man's land part of the property without progressing the round.  To me, the hole is rather awkward.

Ok I get that I used the " incorrect word" . I apologize for the error.

What is was trying to say was it is a neat hole in that it gives you a bit of a breather before the closing five holes.
We have a pool and a pond, the pond would be good for you.
