PGA West got an enormous amount of attention when it was built and opened.
I'm not saying the course is the best/most exciting, but it was probably one of the more
anticipated courses.


Stone Eagle and Rustic and pretty unique and cool places that don't seem to get attention from
the average golf guys.  Architect geeks, yes, pay and plays golfers not as much.

This should be the obvious, and correct, answer.


Although if you ask the average yahoo that flies in from the rest of the country between November and April, they'll probably say Pelican Hill... Fazio, ocean views, photogenic, big clubhouse, valet parking. What's not to like.

If we're going to include restoration projects, San Francisco Golf Club recovered three holes from the original Tillinghast design, including a very charming short par-3.  Nice place.

Too bad you said 50 years and not 51 or we could have included Spyglass! Excitement-wise, I would assume PGA West or Spanish Bay when they opened. But I like Steve's answer.

After my last trip I have say that the quarry and Stone Eagle were both exciting and fun. I loved them.

Personally, when I first heard Pete Dye was building a course on the cliffs of Palos Verdes, I was ecstatic. Probably the most excited I've been prior to a course opening. Then it all went haywire, with a hole sliding down the hill, etc. But if you're asking what project personally got me as a Californian most excited, that was it.


"Exciting" is an interesting word choice for the question. I love Rustic, but it feels more subtly wonderful to me than "exciting." I'd probably go with PGA West Stadium. If not for that island green or the San Andreas bunker, me as a 16 year old with a passing interest in golf wouldn't have been glued to the Skins game on TV every year.

Yes, Cal Club really is a much different course than what was there before and while I'm not sure if the "buzz" has been any greater than other course renovations/openings, I think it is a more exciting course to play than Rustic (and I love Rustic).

Didn't play this course but did walk a good bit of it. It didn't appear to be too offensive but you never know when only walking. What was it that you didn't like ?

At least with wind, narrow, penal, environmentally sensitive areas that did not allow retrieving your ball, blind shots due to marsh, difficult to determine if ball in hazard or not, 6 and a half hour round.


10 better courses near it.


Like the hotel, though.
