Your Favorite Shot of the Day #4 - Cruden Bay
« on: September 27, 2003, 12:11:18 PM »
Back to Scotland.

What is your favorite shot to play on this wonerful gem?  Why?

I'll start.....

So many to choose from.  I would say my favorite shot is the tee shot on #3.  I love this blind tee shot to such a reachable, yet deadly, par 4.  The tee shot on #4 and #7  are close seconds.

Sorry to be boringly in agreement, Jeff, but the drive at #3 was what immediately popped into mind when I saw the topic, and #4 was not far behind.  #3 has it all, however--mystery, beauty, the barest soupcon of visibility, possibility for glory, possibility for despair.

I like the ones you said as well as the 7th risk reward, 8th eagle chance, 9th wow and 10th wow again tee shots as well. I love the new 9th tee. One of the best settings in golf. the 11th is a very tough par 3 with crossing winds

Tiger,

Where did they move the tee on #9?  Over near the cliff on the left?  I could see that spicing the hole up a bit.

I love the third, but I think I'd probably just about plump for the tee shot at the 8th. There's a reason that hole made it on to the cover of Doak's book...

Jeff, the new 9th tee is to the left - the medal tee plays from virtually directly above the 16th tee, and from it you get a view of the lower section of the course from the equivalent of a helicopter's vantage point. It must be one of the great views in world golf, now; that said, while it definitely improves the drive at the 9th, the hole is still my least favorite on the course (albeit not by as great a margin as it used to be), and the drive should not merit consideration for inclusion in this thread. (If you're looking for a shot with a view, try the drive from the box tees on the 10th!)

Cheers,
Darren

Darren,

Well put re: the 8th Hole.  I am shocked when I hear people say that hole is "too easy" or "boring".  If you miss the green right, good luck.  I can't wait to play from the new tee on #9!

For me it was the tee shot on number 5.  For starters the view is spectacular.  It is the first long hole on the golf course.  The view once down in the dunes is arguably equally majestic.  I also love the way the green is tucked tight to the dune on the left.

Jeff, the new tee on 9 as Darren said is on the left up on the cliff with a to die for view down the coast. It is 100 feet or so above the 8th green. you now  want to take your drive and play a draw  and try to make the crown of the hill. I like it better than the old from the right fense tee box.

For me it's the tee shot at the 8th, which is just plain fun, just ahead of the tee shot at #14, which is just plain hard.

I'm shocked Darren put aside his hole in one.

When the wind is off the water, the second shot to the 7th green.  It is uphill, into the wind, and must be aimed between the two knolls that front the green.  From the fairway you cannot see how the right flank of the green falls away-a pushed shot and your' going to pay.

The worst tee shot at CB could be the 16th.  It looks photogenic, but when your tee shot has rolled off the back of the green and you are faced with that uphill pitch-you know the camera has lied!!

We should not pass over the tee shot from the clouds, being number 5. I find it awesome especially for a boy from the flatlands of Louisiana. I have found similiar shots elsewhere including Ventana Canyon Mountain in Tucson a few weeks back but this is the first one that I know of from the days before metal shafts. thanks Whitey I am obviously not readinf close enough. lol

Do you mean #5?
#4 is the par three and that shot is too hard to be alot of fun ;D.  It is also a tad up hill.
5 is id downhill and has been mentioned already.
I vote with the majority # 3 is my favorite tee shot.
Cheers
