TEUGEGA (Ross)
« on: September 28, 2013, 02:13:08 PM »
I have heard great things about 2 upstate  New York  layouts,  Onondaga and Teugega

I am going up to Syracuse  soon, I will be pressed for time, so I must choose one.  Any feedback...

Thank you.

I have played all 3 in the past few months and you can't go wrong. Yahnundasis has the most quirk and is a good challenge. They did have some significant flooding in July so that conditioning may be an issue on the low lying hole. Teugega has one of the best set of Ross greens I have seen. It is a little short but great fun. Onondaga is on a relatively severe piece of property with several really good holes and some fillers All 3 are worth a detour and preference would boil down to individual tastes.

I would take Teugega over the other two. Great Ross greens and the tree removal program that is ongoing has been very well received. A fun golf course. I like Yahnundasis from the seventh hole on but there isn't much Travis left in the first six holes. I like Onondaga as well but would rather play Teugega. Also, access (if that is an issue) to Teugega is a bit easier than it would be for Onondaga.

Mark,

Check out this thread from last year about courses in the area. But from what I've heard (and read on here) you can't go wrong with either of those two.

Funny that other thread got me to return from exile.

Mark,

Can't miss really with anyone of them.

The restoration at Onondaga is completely done - course is severe in places and most tee shots are blind.
You'll need help to play - email if that's the one

Yahnundasis is a place full of wicked potential - punchbowl greens and 11th green are worth the price of admission alone
much easier to arrange play

All three are worth a play, and very different.

Teugega has a fantastic set of greens and a beautiful setting.

Yahnundasis is tons of fun, lots of quirk, and loaded with potential to be really special.

Onandaga has a more refined, country club feel. Has a few standout holes and very good conditioning.

Here's my article on Yahnundasis:

I also did a photo essay on Teugega as well.  They are both better then Onondaga.  1-18 Teugega is stronger, but the Yahnundasis has a few holes that are stronger, quirkier, and more interesting.  You can;t go wrong either way.  Call me for more deets or if you'd like to be introduced to anyone in particular at either club.  I'm sure they'd be delighted to meet you, Mark, as you have really dome such a wonderful job with the Emmet Society.

Agree all 3 worth a visit.

Haven't played Onondaga in a while, but more recently have played "the" Yahnundasis (as they refer to it) and Teugega.

Given 10 rounds I would play 6 Teugega and 4 Yahnundasis ... they are that close IMO.

Yahnundasis always seems to be battling some water issues on the last few holes, but the quirk more than makes up for that.

Play soon ... frost on the Pumpkin imminent!

Teugega  is a pure example  of artistic  Ross'

Brilliant routing  over moraine-formed  land

BOLD  sense of scale with some gigantic bunkers

QUIRK  some top shot bunkers and some wild interior contours

TWO SHOTTERS    an exceptionally interesting set, varied in length and in topography

This  1921 course is worth a special trip

Glens Falls is very good, but  TEUGEGA  is  magnificent  !

Pleased to see you chose Teugaga.......
My scorecard says Teugaga 6, but close to 7
Yahnundasis 2...3
Onandaga 1
And Onandaga is not poor, by any means...
Teugaga is FUN!!

Mark,

Enjoyed your description of Teugaga.  I have had the good fortune of playing there on many occasions, and I could not agree more with your assessment of the course.  In addition to the course features that you emphasize, I appreciate knowing that Ross spent considerable time in Utica during the design and construction of the course.  He did not design if from afar.

Wish you would have had the opportunity to stop by Onondaga and Yahnundasis.  I would like to hear your take on those two courses.  I agree with some of what I've read on this thread.  To Ian's reference to Yahnundasis' 11th green, I would add their 9th and 18th.

I played Teugaga yesterday, What a great golf course. It was in excellent condition and the green complex's where some of the best I have ever seen. The bunkering and the fescue gave it a look of stepping back into the 20's to play a round. Very fun, fair, and a pretty good test of golf. Can't wait to play it again. Can't think of a better patio to have a beer and lunch on after the round. Beautiful view over looking Delta lake.
