The 2016 Open: the most riveting golf in decades
« on: July 17, 2016, 10:27:33 PM »
I admit it. I love watching golf. I get inspired to improve my game. The golf displayed by Stenson and Mickelson these last two days was beyond words. In fact words detract from the experience. Phil's masterful short game that saved him time after time on Saturday, Stenson's ball striking and the almost flawless golf on Sunday culminating with Stenson's last putt was the best theatre since Watson almost won the Open at Turnberry. I couldn't take my eyes off it. Congratulations to both of them for their golf and sportsmanship.

I completely agree. I watched all of the coverage on Golf Channel and NBC. It was fantastic to watch two great players at the top of their games trade shot for shot.

Stenson's performance was Hogan-esque today. I thought Ron Sirak's comment best described today: "Mickelson thought he was paired with Henrik Stenson today. Instead he got a combo of Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus and Bobby Locke."

It also was refreshing to see Andrew Johnston perform on the major stage. Great to see a pro so enthusiastic and so obviously enjoying the experience.

I also was mightily impressed by Steve Stricker's performance. The guy is essentially a part-time golfer and he finishes 4th with only one bad hole the entire tournament.

The best final round in a major I can remember. A true slug fest. Phil never let off the gas. A Sunday for the ages!

I think a very good case can be made that we just saw the greatest round of all time in major championship golf. When you consider the difficulty of the course (Stenson was 14 shots clear of 3rd), being in the final group in the final round of a major, Mickelson shooting a GREAT round himself and putting the pressure on, and the fact that he tied the lowest score of all time in a major, I think it has my vote.

Guts and more guts. Even when Stenson dropped a 50 footer on him Phil did not fold. Nor did Stenson. Phil now has 11 second place finishes in majors, behind only Nicklaus. Classy champion. Classy runner up. Golf and golfers at the best.

I agree with Matt: Stenson just played the greatest major championship round of my lifetime. I was very young when David Graham hit 17 greens at Merion in maybe 1968 or 70 US Open? Was that an equal round? To play in the final group and essentially miss two full shots all day(on first hole ).PM may have played a top10 round.

Great tournament, great broadcast, great camera work...great all around
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

The last great square-off of this magnitude was Watson-Nicklaus at Turnberry in 1977. The next player then, Hubert Green, finished 10 strokes behind Nicklaus, 11 behind Watson. All the more amazing because Henrik was underwater in strokes-gained-putting on the PGA Tour

Very well said, and i could not agree more!

Even my wife was riveted to the TV screen for the bulk of the round, something she rarely engages in.  Even she recognized the magnitude of the moment and the display being put on by both men.  A great spectacle indeed!

Very gentlemanly remark by Jack, just what one would expect.

I don't know how one can be ranked 'higher' than the other. A 65 and a 66 in '77 is surely as well done as a 63 and a 65 in 2016, and watching a 2 time and a 14 time major championship winner doing it is every bit as impressive as this year's accomplishments.

Greg Chalmers finished last. Stenson beat  him by 22 shots in the last rounds and 41 overall. Unbelievable .

Has there ever been a more courteous and gracious loser than Mickelson? That may sound like a backhanded compliment. It is not. It is a complement of the highest order.

In 1977 Nicklaus shot 68,70,65,66. Watson 68,70,65,65. They After two rounds a bunch of guys were in the race. After three rounds it Nicklaus v Watson for the Claret Jug. The last two rounds they shot still may be the best two rounds between opponents that I remember. Mickelson's third round might be the best scrambling round ever played. The last round this year has few peers.

So Phil lies second in the list of golfers with runner-up spots in majors?  Savage, as the kids would say.

I sat down to watch it Sunday morning not caring who won because I like both Phil and Stenson.  I had a feeling early on that Stenson would edge it, but I didn't envisage THAT all happening.  I thought NBC did a great job, other than not needling Miller more when it became apparent that Stenson might shoot 62.

I needed a nap afterwards, and I had only eaten breakfast and drank tea.

I hope more than ever that Phil wins a U.S. Open.

I place Mickelson ahead of both Seve and Faldo on the modern all time greats list and have him a tie with Trevino.

20 under and only one eagle.   Ten birdies on Sunday.  Every round in the sixties.  Amazing golf.

Loved how it was billed as match play from the start of the round.

Fantastic Golf from both players. However calling it the best round in major history is just recency bias.

Without doubt imo the greatest closing round of a major I have ever witnessed. Not only did he have to contend with his playing partner shooting the lights out on Sunday with a 65, Stenson just pured it over the whole weekend. A FINAL ROUND 63 WITH 2 BOGEYS...work that one out.

I said an argument can be made, and a very good one at that. I think I provided sufficient reason why someone would think we just saw the best round in major history.

Scoring Average for the day was 72.80, so Stenson was 9.8 strokes better than the field, the scoring average at Oakmont during Johnny Miller's 63 in 1973 was exactly one stroke higher. This is the most obvious comparison since he won with a 63 as well.

Ruediger Meyer -

Stroke average vs. the field on that day is certainly in Johnny Miller's favor.

However, JM was not in the last group of the day at Oakmont, as he was not the over night leader. He did not have to play head-to-head in a pairing with a guy matching him virtually stroke for stroke during the round. 10 birdies in a final of a major (when teeing off on Sunday with the pressure of being the overnite leader) is very, very impressive measured against any criteria.
