ROUTE 66 golf tour

A friend of mine will be traveling Route 66 in August.  He desires a list of good to great golf courses to play.
Of course he would likely need some access points and references..........of which little help I am.


If anyone can give input it is appreciated. 
Note: he is Chinese national, likely traveling in a foursome.

Southern Hills or Cedar Ridge in Tulsa

If you are just looking for rankings, many of your choices along the way are pretty straightforward.  As I grew up in Tulsa and went to college in Albuquerque, I have driven parts of this route many times and will throw out some of my favorite Everyman good public courses.


In Tulsa I would seek out Forest Ridge in The Broken Arrow suburb.   Solid upscale public daily fee with lots of character.  I would also suggest La Fortune Park if you like solid muni golf in the middle of a city.


The Amarillo Country Club is a very nice track and the best course for about 100+ miles in any direction s far as I know. 


The University of New Mexico South Course in Albuquerque is a great lay of the land design by Red Lawrence.  Also, make sure to eat at the Frontier across from campus before you get out of town.

Apropos of nothing, how do Americans pronounce "Route 66"?

In the eponymous song it is always voiced as "Root", but in speech y'all seem to pronounce the word as "Rowt".

IN the early 60’s Chuck Berry did time inside and asked one of the guards if he could get him a map of the USA.  The guard went straight to the Governor and said he suspected Berry was planning to break out.

The Governor called Berry in and asked him why the sudden interest in geography?
Berry replied it was to help his memory “I recall from St Louis, you go down to Missouri

Route 66 originally ran up through Santa Fe, so Black Mesa should certainly be on the agenda. 


The part of the song Chuck Berry forgot is "don't forget Winona, Kingman, Barstow, San Bernadino..."   Not much good golf on that part of the famous highway!

Do you typically ask if someone can play a bit? Four Chinese nationals driving Route 66 trying to get on privates may not bold well for racism in America.

Friend is looking to PLAY great courses.

I hope they sprinkle in a couple of small town middle America courses as well.  I grew up playing Dwight Country Club about 100 miles outside Chicago, and within 20 miles there are 3 courses/clubs all located less than 2 miles from route 66 (DCC, Wolf Creek and Pontiac Elks).  You'll find good conditions, cheap golf and some unusual features, not to mention interesting characters having a post round drink.

If I was making the trip, I'd certainly want to maximize my opportunities to play great courses, but I'd try to break up the trip with a few of these type stops as well (especially as he gets past St Louis into the great wide open).

Yep. If I'm going to ask a friend to host on a "great" course - which usually means more difficult - it would be nice if they weren't duffers. At the current state of race relations in this country I think we have more to worry about than Chinese nationals getting on private courses. If that computes to racism we are all way too sensitive these days.

Please, I'd love to know why Ron brought it up in the first place. I trust Ron enough to know his friend must be a fine golfer or he would have never asked us to host him. Really, if this guy was Australian would the question have ever been asked. Racism needs to be judged on the blocks not as so often done, at the finish line.

One of the highlights of my formative years was playing support to the Feelgoods with my first band at Manchester Poly in around 1981. By the time we had removed all the Feelgood songs from our set-list we had precious little left!




Great band and a great bunch of guys.
