All,

I have been playing golf from a very young age and been playing competitive golf for nearly as long. I am a financial analyst for a medical device company but still try to play as much as I can. I recently realized the biggest reason I still play in tournaments is because it gives me the opportunity to play some of the best courses in the country. I am so lucky to play golf in the NY metro area.

My interest in golf course architecture started when my dad got me Geoff Shackelford’s The Golden Age of Golf Design for Christmas. I love that book and enjoy studying the history of the game and the great courses from that era.

I am a junior member at Somerset Hills. I’ve read just about everything that has been written on this site about the club and that certainly opened my eyes to what a fantastic place it is. This is my first year there and I still can’t believe I get to play there all the time. I am having a blast.

I am excited to contribute to the discussions. Most of my friends and family can only take a little bit of my golf and architecture thoughts so I’m very happy to be part of this group.

Welcome, Eric.

Lucky fellow being a member at SH.

So, what is it architecturally that you find most appealing at Somerset?

The contrast between the front and back is wonderful. It’s great to play 9 holes after work on the front one day and the back another day. Even though they are different, the two nines blend very well together.

Obviously the greens are the centerpiece at SH. It’s almost fun being out of position there because you will end up with a putt/chip you’ve never had before. When the greens are firm, they demand not only a solid shot, but a well executed shot with the correct shape/height. A low, hard running draw will not hold the Redan green or a ball flown to the back tier on the biarritz 13th.

I think Tillinghast was 100% correct when he said the most enjoyable shots were the ones where you aim away from the pin and let the slope move the ball back towards it. Like all the great courses, if a player wants to get the ball close to the pin, he/she needs to think about where to land the ball and then where the slope take it. There are several greens at SH that allow you to work the ball towards the hole and that is very fun.

Also, the fairways are quite wide for an average/shorter hitter so just about all skill levels can play the course. For a longer hitter/better player, the fairways play much narrower than they appear due to their slopes, especially when they are running out. It’s not easy to make a course playable for all but difficult to score on for a good player but I think Tillinghast achieved that at SH.

Joe, I’ve been through your photo tour of SH several times. Great job!

Eric,

Welcome to GCA! Joe does some wonderful photo tours. I make it a point to drag him out to whatever club I am at (lately that's been a few)

Somerset is one of my favorite tracks and thankfully I was able to play with a few members back when Adam was still the golf professional.

If you ever find yourself looking for a quick nine near NYC come visit me at Skyway Golf Course. Not quite a Tillinghast but still fun.

Enjoy GCA

@Eric - Fellow NJ golfer right here. Great state to play and welcome to the board. I'm a noob to GCA myself.

@Chris - I'm curious to hear what you think of Skyway. I was in Hoboken until late last year and didn't get a chance to make it there but I heard pretty good things.

Here is my photo album for Somerset Hills (from July of 2014):

And Chris Wegner's Skyway course is very cool.  I just played there a couple of weeks ago.  That photo album just went live this morning at MyPhillyGolf.com:

Joe,

I am biased about Skyway as I am the Golf Professional, but it's good. The greens have lots of slope and contours offering lots of interest. The Wind is always present and never consistent in direction so the course changes not only daily but hourly.

It is a very tight site and we don't lack for golfers, we are going to exceed 6,000 rounds for the month.

I was lucky enough to host Joe Bausch so enjoy the photo tour.

Welcome, Eric...some good thoughts regarding Somerset Hills.

I'd add eating apples on the 1st hole to the long list of attributes.  ;)

I also need to get to Skyway, Chris.   I'll likely bring my wife sometime this summer.

Ha! Well there ya go. Definitely going to try and make it there before the summer ends but glad to hear you guys are doing well. It was a badly needed option in the area as pretty much Edgewater Range was the only way to hit balls without jumping on the highway.

One of my favorite courses. I also did a tour, and was lucky to catch the course on quite a nice day: http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,59808.0.html

Welcome aboard Eric.  What are some favorite courses you have played?

I would put Plainfield, Winged Foot East, Somerset Hills, and Hollywood among my favorites in the category of really fun to play, not overly long, fantastic greens, lots of strategy. Each one has a world class short par 3 (11 at Plainfield, 12 at Somerset Hills, 13 at WFE, and 4 at Hollywood).

I would put Ridgewood (tournament course), Bethpage Black, and Baltusrol Lower as my favorite long, very challenging tee to green courses. At Ridgewood, it's amazing to me how many of my favorite par 4s they have (6, 9, 11, 14, 18) and great par 5s. Bethpage Black is special place because I've played it with my dad at least once per year since 2001. At Baltusrol, I get goosebumps going to the place Jack Nicklaus won two U.S. Opens on. The front 9 is probably the hardest 9 holes of golf I've played considering it's a par 34 for tournaments. Scary to think Jack and Lee Janzen broke/tied U.S. Open scoring record there.

Interesting choices. 3 of these courses would be in the top 5 for wild green contours in the Met Area... I like your style ;D

Welcome Eric,

SH is one of my favourites, and I loved your description of the front vs. back 9. They are different, but they compliment each other so well. My favourite greens were 2, 5, 7, 12, 13, and 16.

Side comment - caddies at SH are some of the best I have seen. So much hustle.
