Mid-West/East Coast Trip Suggestions
« on: June 14, 2016, 06:39:37 AM »
Hi everyone,

My mate from here in Australia has enlisted me to help him come up with a list of courses to play on his second trip to the States this year.

Imagine you were putting together the ideal golf tour of each city/region with no restraints, money not an issue...
What would you consider the 'best experience' in each place and why?  One round in each.

Chicago
NY
Washington D.C.
Boston
TPC Sawgrass region (obviously Sawgrass is out, but in the region)

I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

Funny.

I don't see any cities on that list actually in the mid-west!!   ;D

P.S. I know, I know....they can call Chicago mid-west, but a rose is still a rose regardless of its label.

An Australian's understanding of a debatable US geographical label is what you found troubling in his post?
New for '24: Monifieth x2, Montrose x2, Panmure, Carnoustie x3, Scotscraig, Kingsbarns, Elie, Dumbarnie, Lundin, Belvedere, The Loop x2, Forest Dunes, Arcadia Bluffs x2, Kapalua Plantation, Windsong Farm, Minikahda...

Didn't use the word trouble now did I Brian??!!

But yes, considering the mountains and mountains of threads on places to play in these cities, calling Chicago the Mid-West is indeed the most mysterious thing of the OP.

Canal Shores just north of Chicago is a must-see, worthy of the flight from Austrailia alone.
If in New York, I would look into the Van Cortlandt course. I've heard there is a good chance you could run into Michael Douglas in the locker room on any given day.
George Wright in Boston is argueably the finest Donald Ross design in the City of Boston

Why is TPC Sawgrass obviously out if you are going to be in the "TPC Sawgrass region?" And by Region do you mean the state of Florida?

Kalen--
So where do you say Chicago is?

Not really sure what to say here, other than in Illinois. But I can tell you this....

Chicago is approx. 780 miles from New York City, the Eastern Seaboard
And 2100 miles from San Francisco, the West.

That's nearly 3 times as far.... so Chicago isn't even in the middle, much less mid-west.  If anything its Mid-East.

P.S.  Before you say it, yes I know how it originally got its label...but a lot of things have changed since then and categorized more accurately.

His post is not troubling, its just Aussies being Aussies!

"Troubling" is Americans who want to move the great city of Chicago from the Midwest to the Mideast. That's borderline treason.

Nice one, Pat.

Don't know how to take this question/thread/post.
Is this guy serious?
Every other douche bag has the money, but that will not get you on the courses listed here....except the ones YOU listed.... ;D

This reminds me of the thread that got Mucci....oh, never mind... ::)

Mark,

That's why I was very careful to say Mid-East as opposed to the Middle East....but I'm sure there are some on here who would agree with the latter...  ;)

Why are we of all people judging someone who is visiting from Australia wanting to play the finest courses in our country?  Worse yet, why are so many raters judging him? At least the members and staff of a great club would enjoy his company. Can't say that about most of us.

Having grown up in NYC and DC the Midwest begins in Youngstown. The west begins in Chicago.

Thanks John,

I'm just a guy from Australia, who loves golf and design, looking to help out a mate by calling on those in the Northern Hemisphere with opinions, observations and knowledge regarding the great courses of your land. :)

Ian,
He's not a douche with money... Just a top bloke who wants to have some great experiences like the rest of us  :)

Thanks everyone for your thoughts... and Pat for the little detail to go with each one.
I thought Sawgrass was out due to renovations that are happening there that begun straight after Players?

Ps. And thanks for the geography lesson lads  ;)

Having grown up in L.A., the Midwest starts around Colorado/Utah, and basically everything east of the Mississippi is the East Coast. I've never really understood how Arizona/New Mexico is the Southwest when I grew up further south and west than most of those of states.
