I've decided to take a long, relaxing solo golfing trip to Scotland.  Although I know where I'll be staying and have pre-booked a few (9) open competitions, I've decided that I'm going to be very flexible and decide my agenda on a day-to-day basis.  I would really like to meet some of the GCA members and play a round and/or have a pint with them.  I've played the bucket-list courses on my previous trips, and really want to play the of the beaten path courses and with locals where possible.  If you are near any of my destinations on any of the following dates, let me know and we can meet up for a round or a pint:

30/06/16 - 06/07/16 Nairn
07/07/16 - 13/07/17 Dornoch
14/07/16 - 17/07/16 Inverness
18/07/16 - 26/07/16 Cruden Bay
27/07/16 - 03/08/16 Perth
04/08/16 - 12/08/16 St. Andrews

Look forward to meeting some of the people I enjoy reading on here.

Cheers!

Chris,

I think I'll be in Fife when you're at St Andrews if you fancy a game at Elie.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Chris,
Given my impending state of lack of gainful employment, I should be free to host you anytime in August at Leven. Hope that suits!

Chris,

Let me know if you make it over the bridge into Edinburgh. You'll need some respite after slumming it in Fife.  ;)

I'll check my diary, but if possible might make it up to Cruden Bay to join you for a round. I'd like to see the course this summer and playing it with a GCAer would be a bonus.

Mark,

Elie, Leven and Lundin are my primary golfing targets while I'm in St. Andrews and would certainly enjoy a game with you.  I'll send you a message as I'm working my way down to St. Andrews and we can get something set up.

Cheers!

Marty,

That would be spectacular - I appreciate your hospitality!  Leven (along with Elie and Lundin) is on top of my list while in St. Andrews.

As I get closer to St. Andrews I'll message you and we can get something set up.

Cheers!

Michael,

That would be great - by the time I'm out of the Highlands I'll be looking for an accent I can understand!

Please feel free to join me in Cruden Bay at your convenience, just message me and let me know what your schedule looks like and we'll try to put something together.  I'll also be getting a UK phone number and I'll pass it along to you when I get it.

Cheers!

Chris -

Be sure to play the courses near Dornoch (Golspie, Brora & Tain) while you are there. All are well worth playing.

You might want to look into buying a Dornoch Firth Golf Pass, which will give you discounted green fees at both Dornoch courses as well as the 3 courses mentioned above.

David,

Thanks for the input.  I'm definitely playing Golspie and Brora - and I'm signed up for the Eriskay Senior Open at Tain, as well as the MacLeod Trophy at Dornoch.

Is it worth the drive to go as far north as Wick and/or Thurso? Thinking I might do a day trip up there and play both courses - it would give me a great opportunity to drive the northern coastline and see some of the country I'm not likely to see again.

Cheers!

I have not played any of the courses north of Brora.

Based on what friends have told me and several posts on this chatboard, Reay is the best course north of Brora. Durness is the most scenic due to its spectacular setting. Wick is good.

Here is a thread from last year on Reay & Wick:

Chris,
This journey of yours is taking on a "Tour of The Hebrides" aspect. Johnson made some very acerbic remarks about dear Scotland amongst which was,

"Knowledge was divided amongst The Scots like bread in a besieged town, to every man a mouthful, to no man a bellyful"

However he would have been completely wrong in regards to the golfing knowledge of which you will be the lucky beneficiary as you all go together whacking your golf ball over (through!) the heather.

As you can see your wee adventure is making me, sitting here in Oz, nostalgic and maudlin.

And watch out for that Marrrrty Bonnarrrrr if he's nae workin' he will hae been out gowfin' and have sharpened his game summit awfu!

Have a fine time,

Orra best Colin

when your around Inverness give me a shout and we can go for a round and a pint. I am just outside Dingwall. Wick and Reay are worth the drive up to play.

Chris,

I will be in Edinburgh, mainly for the festival, arriving from USA on 6/8/16 and departing 21/8/16. Not a "golf" trip but I am sure that I will bring my gear and try to get in a few rounds.

Perhaps you can cross the Forth bridge southbound to meet Michael Graham and myself at Braid Hills? You will not regret that decision one bit.

Also see my review of Pitreavie Golf Club. on this site.  Very much worthy of a trip from St. Andrews to Dunferline.

Since you plan to meander slowly over Scotland, why not include Askernish Golf Club on South Uist in the Outer Hebrides Islands. That is a unique experience, and low key as well!!! Calmac ferries serve them as well as Yoube air out of Glasgow.

You are welcome to PM me regarding your plans.

Best,

Chris, I'm not a local, but I'll be traveling from the USA to the Highlands around the same time. In fact, I'm also planning on playing in the Macleod Trophy at Royal Dornoch on Sunday 10 July. I'll be playing a second round at Dornoch that Sunday in the late afternoon/early evening too. Would love to play a round and/or have a pint if you're interested.

Thanks for the input on Wick and Reay, I really think I'd enjoy a day in the northernmost parts.  Given my lack of schedule, I think it would be a relaxing side trip.

Cheers!

Steve,

I'm looking forward to the Macleod Trophy - given how poorly I've scored at Dornoch in the past, I believe that losing 7 clubs can only help.  I'll make sure to look you up while there.

Is there anything better than GolfClubAtlas when it comes to organizing n overseas trip?   There is so much great advice given on this thread!   It doesn't really get much better than golf in Scotland!

If you get a rough plan near the north give me a shout for a game at Brora or Wick, I'm a member at both and live in Wick. I's say Wick and Reay are worth a hit and see the far North. I'll talk slowly if that helps you understand :-)

I note you are wandering through the EAST of Scotland but if you manage to take in the rest of the country, let me know and I'll try and hook up for a game.

I'll be in St. Andrews from 7/22 - 8/2.  If anyone happens to be in town during that time let me know.  My playing itinerary isn't set in stone but I will most likely be able to make time for 2-3 rounds outside of my current commitments.  I'd be happy to host anyone for a pint at SAGC if schedules can jive.

Niall,

If my wanderings take me elsewhere in Scotland, I'd love to hook up for a game.  Where might one have to wander to take advantage of this offer?  I've got some ideas in mind for some side trips when I get into Perth.

Cheers!

Chris,

Let me know if you are planning on venturing over the Forth Bridge to Edinburgh during your time in Perth/St Andrews and I can try to sort a game for us at Burgess or NB (would most likely have to be at some point over the weekend of 30/31 July or 6/7 August depending on your other plans).
