For many years now the 8th hole at Troon (the "Postage Stamp") has been famous the world over as one fo the great short holes in golf. Yet, when it first came into being over 60 years ago, it was almost universally condemned in the West of Scotland as being a bad hole. The short 8th, as we know it today, came into being in the winter of 1909-10, when a number of alterations were made to the course. Previously it had been a blind hole, with the tee shot played over the hill that is now to the left of the present green. The construction of the new green--the one we know today--brought the target into view from the tee and shortened the hole by 50 yards. PERCY HUGGINS (1972)
