Favorite architect by par?
« on: April 08, 2016, 10:39:42 AM »
The Donald Ross short par 3 thread has me thinking. Who's your favorite architect by par? Apologizes if a similar thread already exists. I'll start:

Favorite architect for Par 3's? Donald Ross / Harry Colt a close second
Favorite architect for Par 4's? Tom Doak
Favorite architect for Par 5's? Willie Park Jr.

William Langford for par 3s; he built several stand-out ones, and importantly his courses features a nice variety of them. He usually built 5 on each course. Lawsonia #10 and #4 stand out there; Spring Valley #5 and #17 for the green alone are also quite good.

Yes, absolutely.

On my early days here, I remember quite a debate with Tommy N about it.  Even though Tillie is great, all architects get stuck on pet concepts, sometimes getting too attached.  While TN disagreed, he at least gave me props for logically defending it.

I understand your point. I think it takes a special kind of club and membership to play a HHA hole every day.At my place, the members would have it grassed over even if AWT himself had put down the sand.

Par 3 - Mackenzie (admittedly it could be the sites he had that I like)
Par 4 - Ross (haven't seen any Colts)
Par 5 - Tillie (the #4 at B'page Black kind)

I could see Strantz being in here somewhere...may be the par 4.5 category.

I'm a big fan of Mike Strantz' par 3s.

Par 3s - Flynn (I remember far more of his than of Ross')
Par 4s - Seems almost an unfair question - too many to choose from...
Par 5s - McRaynor - I always come back to the 15th at Shoreacres

Jeff -

Please come visit Baltimore CC when you get a chance. We only have two par fives but they are both superb. I think you would enjoy them even though one is called Hell's Half Acre.

Both of Five Farms' par-fives are fantastic, and that's coming from a guy who doubled the first!
