Club graces
« on: September 23, 2003, 09:57:43 AM »
A friend of mine takes over as Captain of Wilmslow Golf Club in December.  He is required to say grace before formal dinners.  He wonders if there any good club graces and, if so, if you would mind sharing them with him.  He's not on E-mail so I'm happy to act as go-between.

What I'd recommend is something very simple and tasteful. I'd recommend slightly reworking Jimmy Durante's famous closing line (Goodnight Mrs. Callabash, wherever you are?") into

"Thank you (or Bless you) Mrs. Callabash, wherever you are."

He could always try the "Selkirk Grace", but I'm not sure if the burghers of Wilmslow would understand it....

Tha biadh aig cuid, 's gun aca ca\il,
acras aig cuid,'s gun aca biadh,
ach againne tha biadh is sla\int',
moladh mar sin a bhith don Triath.

Rich:

Is that really a grace? It looks more like one of your posts on architecture on GOLFCLUBATLAS.com    ;)

You might remember better Rabbie Burns' translation from the Gaelic:

Some hae meat and canna eat,
and some wad eat that want it,
but we hae meat and we can eat,
and sae the Lord be thankit.

That last iteration of that grace is bit more intelligable than your most cogent post to date on architecture on GOlfCLUBATLAS.com!  ;)

What fun! He's a Scot so he'll manage the dialect.  Many thanks.

Mrs. Callabash? No.

It should be Mr. Callaway!

How about this (or one of various versions) from my church's family week of many years ago, sung to the tune of 'Edelweiss':

Bless our food, bless our friends
Come oh Lord and sit with us.
Make our talk glow with peace
Come with your love to surround us.

Friendship and peace
May they live and grow
Live and grow forever.

Bless our food, bless our friends,
Bless all people forever.

Mike B,

Our version of yours started with "Rub a dub dub" instead of "Yubba dubba dub".
