Hope Valley CC
« on: March 26, 2016, 07:29:43 PM »
Hope Valley CC was ranked number 101 in Golfweek's recent list of classic courses.  I'm not very familiar with this course and there's not much on this board or the club's website about the course's history or any improvements or restorative work that might have been done recently.

I'm quite interested in learning more about Hope Valley.  I'm planning to be in Chapel Hill in early May and, if time permits, might try to arrange a visit.

Thanks.

A damn good secret!

That's the reason that I asked.  Pretty unusual to see a course ranked at number 101 which has never, to  my knowledge, appeared on any list of top golf courses.  I went to school in Chapel Hill and, while I had heard of Hope Valley, never paid much attention.

Anyone choose to elaborate?

There was a full photo tour and everything, I don't know what happened.

As it pertains to the rankings.  I have a good deal of courses way ahead of it that the mags have ahead of it.  It's a solid course.

Hope Valley has always been good but they had a nice renovation a few years ago and switched to bermuda greens.  I think some raters have been by and it's getting more notice.  I look forward to playing there several times this summer.

It is a good solid Ross course and part of their renovation was to soften the greens so they could increase green speeds which is what most members wanted.

The greens are very difficult to hit from the fairway due to false fronts and firmness, need to hit irons solid.  There is an excessive amount of false fronts imo.  The hybrid bermuda greens are firm and the fairways were soft when I played there.  The course is about a 6 imo.

Thanks all.  Appreciate the feedback.  The photo tour was especially helpful.  I'm certainly going to try to play HPCC when I'm in the area.

One question remains:  The Club is in a residential neighborhood surrounded by homes and with the need to cross a streets or two.  Does this have any impact on the visual experience?  I didn't read any mention of either the houses or the streets but, then again, there is rarely any mention of the houses or streets at Sedgefield.

The home lots are all big, so one doesn't notice the homes that much unless it is to admire them.  Road crossings won't ruin your day.  Enjoy!

John K must be hitting the bottle or something....

This thread's been going for a few days now and he's yet to chime in to chastise on the veiled access request.

HVCC is a 1926 Ross, with the original routing intact.  There has been work done there at various times, but the most recent work a few years ago by Brian Silva was an extensive renovation/restoration.  While it included changing the greens from bent to Champion Bermuda with appropriate contours, there were some bunkers removed and restored to the original design.

It's a par 70 with only one par 5 on each side, and it ends with a long, uphill par three back to the clubhouse.  HVCC was one of the courses in Bryron Nelson's 11 consecutive win streak (Durham Open, I believe?), and I have heard it said that the 11th hole was one of Nelson's selections for the best 18 holes from those 11 courses.  The story continues with Hogan taking the club to task because a creek that ran down the right side of the fairway had been piped at the orders of a Greens Committee chair; I have no idea if either or both of those stories are true, but I've heard them for years.

It's a terrific golf course, and that ranking doesn't surprise me, although I hadn't seen it.  I don't think the club especially wants (or needs) any widespread public attention; it has been the old-money club in Durham since it opened, and still is.  They stay, by choice, quite a bit under the radar.
