PGA National hosted the 1987 PGA Championship. I'm guessing it was rather warm.

Not sure about 1987, but I believe they changed the schedule in 1971, and the PGA was played at PGA National in Feb. It probably had the best weather of just about any PGA. :)

A summer major in Florida is not possible due to pop up storms.  It would be too unpredictable, and probably not possible to get a full field around in a day.  All of the FSGA tournaments in the summer only have morning double tees to make sure everyone is done before the afternoon storms, and it's usually close.

Streamsong courses may be to short at 7100 yds., but would a composite course work for a major? Is the Hanse course going to be contiguous, or in a separate area. It is close enough to Tampa and Orlando, and Florida hasn't hosted a major to my recollection.

The Black is completely separate from the Red and Blue.  It occupies the land over the water just south of Red three, four, and five.  While a major in Florida is unlikely due to what time of the year majors are hosted and the extreme heat, the black course is certainly going to be long enough.  Its my understanding that Streamsong is instead hoping to host high level Amateur events.

Related question on Streamsong.  Could you put together a composite course that would combine the "best" holes of each course?  Would it feel too disjointed being from different architects?  I haven't played there yet, and with the Black being designed, I'm probably a few years away from going, but does make me wonder?

I've never thought about making an 18 hole composite course between the Red and the Blue however, there are plenty of places to cross over one course to the next.  I don't think the combination of the holes themselves would be awkward, however in order to get 18 holes I'm sure the routing would feel a bit off.  Given the added distance, I would expect the black course to host the PGA Tour if they ever visited.

The 1987 PGA was in early August. I think the temp hit 97 during the final round.

What about Trinity Forest?

Trinity Forest is not a public course.  I would guess it will carry an initiation fee of 150-200k.

Wouldn't geographic location be important?  What part of the country is under represented?

Washington DC Area?  From what I have seen on tube, Congressional does not impress me.  But could the USGA never go to another course close to the nation's capital?

Denver Area? If Cherry Hills is too short (yes, a casualty of the modern ball), then another course in that area might be possible.

St. Louis?  Kansas City?

Thanks Greg,

I was under the impression C&C were building a public course in the DFW area. Am I wrong on that? If not Trinity Forest, is there another?

I hear rumblings that the Jackson Park project on the south side of Chicago is still alive.  I imagine that those powers that be would be angling for a Chicago major given all of the action that has been going on in WI.

Anyone else hearing similar stories?

I know its been brought up from time to time in occasional past threads...

But how about a complex in the Far Hills area?  Then the boyz could build exactly what they want and have a place to hit the ball around..including perhaps The US Open on a rotating basis, like The Open at St. Andrews.

They would also host other USGA tournaments there (US Mens and Women Amateur, Girls and Boys Jr, etc)  and it would turn into a prestige kind of thing for the aspiring up and comers to see how they do with more or less the same test as the pros.

But the biggest perk would be, they could make the course as devilishly hard as they wanted...and hey no complaints...its their course right?!   ;)

Wasn't there a PGA at PGA National?

See posts #22 & 27. With the summer heat and humidity in Florida, how likely is it that another major (likely the PGA) would return to Florida? On the other hand, is the weather in Florida in August all that different than Oklahoma, Georgia or South Carolina, each of which has hosted recent majors.

Gotta agree with Brian here.  If you're playing in any of those places in August....Lawd have mercy!!    ;D

There is not another.  Trinity Forest will have a First Tee training center (and be the home of the SMU golf team), and I believe part of the deal with the city was for there to be some public play.  But of course that play will be high dollar charity outings.

How much land do you need to build a course to host a major ?  250-300 acres?
