"Waste Management" seems an apt description on multiple levels.

LOL. ;) ;D

I'm pretty old school, but it's once a year and I thought the ace celebration, in a traditionally raucus environment was fine.
I'm not suggesting it's good (or bad) for golf either.
It's not "golf", it's an entertainment event contained within a golf event.
When you wait hours in line to get into those bleachers, you know what you signed up for, so I' not shedding any tears for anyone doused in beer.

These are fans having fun(maybe a bit too much) in an otherwise rank and file event on the tour.
The boorish fans at Bethpage (in a major no less),are just that-boorish.
I also appreciate The Masters keeps a tight lid on their own standard of behavior.

I'm not a big "grow the game"r, and I never like hearing phrases like "golf needs this or that", but I'm not going to throw a wet blanket on fans having fun in a contained environment where the players and the fans knew what they signed up for, and charity is a big beneficiary.

I was reading an op-ed this morning in the New York Times by their 'Common Good Conservative' Ross Douthat. He was complaining about our 'fatal impulse toward consistency,' in reference to the legalization of sports gambling across the country in the wake of the Supreme Court's 2018 decision striking down the federal law that limited it to Nevada.

His main point is that there's nothing wrong with inconsistency in gambling regulations. Let it happen in a few regulated places. But not so much that it becomes commonplace to do it--it preys on the weaknesses of those who are already weak and societies aren't supposed to do that.

Here's the link, but it's paywalled: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/12/opinion/super-bowl-gambling-sports.html

I think that I agree with Ross Douthat about sports gambling and I think I feel the same way about this. We don't want the rowdiness and beer throwing on every hole at every golf event. But currently, it's like sports gambling before 2018, heavily restricted. It doesn't even occur all the time here. Just when there's a hole-in-one. If it started to become more widespread, there'd be reason to start cracking down. But it hasn't, so there isn't.

And if growing the game is something that you want, I'm pretty sure this contributes. Normal people don't like the Augusta-style stuffiness and this is certainly an antidote.

Now I'm not in favor of growing the game. It's hard enough to get tee times now. Still, people have fun with this stuff and I think it's great to allow it...within limits.

I found what happened at the end of last year's PGA tournament dangerous due it being completely uncontrolled that could have resulted in serious harm to both players and spectators. What happened yesterday was completely different. It was spontaneous but proper guard rails were in place that it was nothing more than exuberance and a lot of wasted beer.

I’m all for spectators enjoying the experience and in this case easing the decorum. That said people dousing others with beer and throwing bottles, cans, and assorted debris on the tee is a fail. If you throw empty beer cans onto the floor or field at an NBA, NFL or MLB game and get caught there’s a pretty good chance you are going to get tossed. By glorifying it to the extent they have it’s gotten out of control.

Tim,

Thanks for bringing this up.  Fans in basically every other sport are not only booted but often have thier season tickets revoked and/or lifetime bans for this type of behavior.  Still baffled at how this is deemed acceptable on any level.

If you look at the history of this tournament with the next over the top thing, the escalations for better...and worse...will undoubtedly continue, especially with the CBS broadcast team rewarding this behavior.

P.S.  Mike if The Thunderbirds are OK with this type of stuff, there are certainly plenty of worthy organizations out there to engage.  I hope they do the right thing on this.

There’s something akin to it although much less raucous at the Made In Denmark event on the European Tour.
Last day they usually have the hole set on the front just below a steep step in the green.
Bit like the last day at the Masters when the hole is set back left on the 16th or one of the earlier days at the 17th at TPC Sawgrass Players Championship when the hole is right at the front.
All seem to be hoping for a hole-in-one in a stadium or semi-stadium setting setting but with fans/spectators/patrons who maybe aren’t quite so boozed-up as at the 16th at TPC Scottsdale.

Guess we didn't have to wait 7 years for the next one...

Today clean up is 33% of the time...
  • The vols are now conditioned to anticipate
  • It's only 10:30 am out there...the stands or the beer cups or breathalyzer tests do not runneth over just yet.

...Yes... and the other question behind that one, "How do they stop any of it now, even if they want to?"

And forget the aces, when will this Fan Duel/Sportsbook universe permit (cover up) one of 50,000 to scream out in the middle of a 3-1 favorite like Koepka's swing or putt, because they have money on Theegala or Scheffler at 50-1... why wouldn't you if you had a 100 bucks on one of them?...Ethical norms and personal grace?  Not there.

V . . . I did not want to admit it, but you are correct . . . this is decadence plain and simple . . . I just finished Gary Shteyngart's excellent satire Super Sad True Love Story which takes a pretty good stab at where all of this is heading.

P.S.  Erik, when did I say I was against players scoring 3 goals in a game aka a hat trick?  Its the chucking shit on the ice that is my beef.
You know what I'm saying. Throwing hats on the ice is a fun thing to do. It barely delays the game, and it's not like it happens all that often.

I don't know if this was directed for all who comment negatively or just for MC.. but as for me, I watch golf constantly up to July, 1/2 the time on mute any weekend...I was watching the Middle East tourney this morning, a replay after that... THAT and NOT THIS is the reason I do so... but THIS will be a reason I go to even fewer tournaments, forget this.

Throwing anything on the field of play in any sport should get you thrown out of the event. It’s stupid and dangerous. If you call Bryson Brooksie, you get thrown out but you can throw beer cans with no ramification?

Actually, the only thing I watched this week of the tournament was a Twitter replay of yesterday's hole-in-one shitshow, Don.

This was golf spectating like Jan 6th, 2021 was normal civil discourse.
