Sherwood CC Renovation- what do you know?
« on: January 16, 2016, 08:41:59 AM »
I guess I missed this one.

So will Sherwood CC in Thousand Oaks be best restoration in 2016?

Here is the blog, http://swilson681.wix.com/scc-restoration-blog#!home/c1k8r/Page/2

What do you think are the big changes? Are there any big changes?

I think sand capping the fairways are big. And I guess the irrigation needed to replaced after opening in 1989. That would be 25 year old irrigation system. I am surprised that they went with sod instead of bermuda.

Just because they are sodding rough, doesn't mean it's NOT Bermuda.
I don't know they're grassing selections, but obviously the shortgrass is cool season.

I guess you could sod bermuda. I remember the series about Cross Creek and they did sod around bunkers.

I heard this a couple of years ago so there may be motivation beyond this but my friend who is a member told me they were having tremendous difficulty with maintenance in the hot months that he didn't even bring guests out.

Santa Anna bermudagrass is becoming popular in that region. Mr. Nicklaus commented on it a few weeks ago when I had the honor of speaking with him at Old Marsh, but Sherwoods turf didn't come up, only trees. Frontier Golf is doing the construction.
In an effort to conserve water, and years of overseedig, all logic leads me to think Bermuda roughs and maybe fairways? LACC is all bermudagrass

Bentgrass fairways, greens, and tees...ryegrass rough.

Sandcapping fairways doesn't inherently sound like restorative work.

Well, its not a restoration for one.

AChao,

When I first played there, you could fry and egg on the sidewalk, yet, you couldn't wear shorts.

They kept buckets of ice and cold drinks in the carts.

Scott,

What makes you believe that restoring Sherwood to it's opening day configuration is a noble pursuit ?

Mr. Peter Wagner, the club president at the time, told me back in 2008 that they were considering having Nicklaus come back out and do some renovations. Bunkering was an item the membership had on their radar, IIRC.
