After a quick scan, I don't believe anyone brought up the 13th at Lahinch. A seeming breather before the long stretch back to the clubhouse, the sub 300 yard 13th rarely provide rest to the weary player.

14 at Ganton and 18 at Kington have already been mentioned but both are great holes.

10 on Crail Craighead is a brilliant short par 4, made by a "pimple" in the green  which makes it essential to be on the right part of the green and a deep fronting bunker on the LHS and a pot short of the green threatening the shot drawn in from the right to avoid the fronting bunker.

See you there?   Walker Cup is my favorite event to spectate.

I wish. I just played LACC again for the first time since 2000 and the redo was remarkable. It was so much better than before and I loved what I saw before. I really thought #6 was fantastic. As much as the #10 Riviera is noted, I think I like #6 LACC better. It will be cool watching those guys attack the hole.

If you took any of the holes mentioned above and routed them into an an 18-hole course, well you'd have a damn fine par-72 course. Actually you'd probably have two or three damn fine courses.


In addition, if you cut back on some of there yardages and played most of them as par-3's you'd also have a bunch of really fine holes.

8th at Crowborough Beacon. 314 off the Daisy's, 329 off the tips. Lovely secluded tee, gently rising uphill all the way to a wonderful original Mackenzie green wich has some wonderful movement in it.

Thomas, you are dead on.  I'd love to compile 18 of these fantastic holes brought up and think it would be a course everyone would love to play.  The short par 4 is the greatest hole type in golf IMO.

It's a lot more challenging than the yardage would indicate.
That elevated green is challenging from any distance.

And as you state, the wind makes it more fun and challenging.

Having played Glasgow Gailes for the first time on Friday, I'm pleased to see that Sean has listed the 9th there in this thread.  I thought it was a world class short par 4, with a green that is seriously difficult to hit from 30/40 yards.

We talked about doing that for the next short course at Bandon.  However, the property was steep enough and narrow enough that par-4 holes [even 300-yarders] didn't really work well on most of it.

I think that was a blessing in disguise. I like the short 4 as much as the next guy, but I think the inherent "choice"  -- essentially an iron or a wood off the tee -- can get monotonous quite quickly, and I think the architect can get a titch lackadaisical, lulled into letting the concept/template carry the day instead of working extra hard to find/create great golf holes that, over the course of the round, also provide variety and rhythm. Now that I think of it, I guess I *don't* actually like the short 4 as much as others do -- I think an entire course comprised of nothing but short 4s would be a poor/boring golf course.

That would have been pretty cool...different enough to separate itself from the preserve.  I think that's my issue with most standalone par 3 courses...people want to hit the driver!
