The 277 yd #5 at Glen Echo CC. They call it Roadway because the driveway to club goes right through the middle,  distinguishing itself from a Road hole as it has none of those traits.

Tiny green surrounded by bunkers, but otherwise not very penal. Making it very easy to grab the big dog!

Just don't hit it right. The heckling is worse than 16 at TPC Scottsdale ;D
Amen to that. And not of the drunk frat boy variety.

Praising the daily yellow markers and without listing previously mentioned favourites; below is a handful of favourites.

18 Kington (for Mark B) - the greatest finishing hole in golf

I would normally go for #11 Saunton East, but gradually I have been won over to the 10th.

3 Cavendish

4 Painswick

11 Painswick

9 Beau Desert

3 WHO

13 Stoneham

Pine Valley #5!!!

Ha!

Pine Valley #8 is pretty special and #12 is good too. I think (based on the card I found on google) that 8 from the members' tees sneaks in and 12 is 3 yards over.

Sean - #1 and #4 (especially 4) on WHN are both very good short par fours.

#15 at World Woods Pine Barrens is the only for for it short hole in the world I have encountered multiple times that I found to be so tempting to go for the green that I couldn't resist doing it, even though I knew it was a bad play.

On the modern side:
The 5th at Boston Golf Club
The 6th at Pacific Dunes
The 15th at Bayonne
are the best modern sub-325yd par-4s that I've played. These holes actually have quite a bit in common.

On the classic side, I'd go with:
The 17th at Crystal Downs
The 5th at Maidstone
The 6th at Myopia Hunt Club
The 5th at Somerset Hills
The 2nd at National Golf Links
as my all-time favorites (the latter two being less than 325 yards from the regular tees).

Jon Cavalier,

With your logo how could you leave off # 1 at NGLA.

As starting holes go, # 1 at NGLA and GCGC are terrific

I'm surprised that no one named # 12 at PV.

# 6 at WFW is probably the most difficult of the bunch.
An easy 6 or more if you miscalculate or fail to execute properly.

# 11 at Preakness Hills.
# 3 and # 12 at MRCC
# 13 at Hollywood
# 6 at Ridgewood (NJ) Center
# 3 at ANGC
# 14 and # 15 at Pine Tree.
# 12 at Boca Rio
# 8 and # 9 at CPC

# 3 Kingston Heath   Love the angle needed to manage the slope in the green

#15 Victoria              Tee shot made me crazy, considering it's not too tight.  Cool little hole

Sean, isnt that 4 at Painswick you've pictured.

Most of my favourites have already been mentioned, however I will add the 1st at Brora to the list. The 4th at Durness was pretty good as well if I remember correctly.

The one minor grumble about my day to day golf is the lack of a real short par 4, which is why I'd love to see a bigger forward tee on the 16th at Hollinwell...

Cheers,

James

Fun short par 4's
8th at Narin and Portnoo
3rd at Cruit Island
6th at Carradale(whichever 6th or 15th that uses high tee)
3rd at Buncrana (coolest short hole green I've seen) daunting shot over #1 green
12 Pennard
5th at Southampton
8 Goat Hill-driveable blind drive to hogback fairway
3 Goat Hill-driveable under ideal conditions severe right to left tilt
4 Goat Hill-mystery abounds-226 yards over an aiming flag to a green sloping away with a 6 degree slope

Currently pondering those I've played.

One I've not played but have heard others rave about is the 290 yd par-4 4th at Irvine GC in Ayrshire with a small plateau green hard up against the railway line wall.

(club website images)

Looks a cracker. Anyone played it?

That looks like an awesome hole. Just one question, do the green fees include insurance if you hit the train?  8)

Pat:

Good question - the first at NGLA is my favorite opening hole anywhere, but having chosen the second hole, I didn't want to name two from the same course.

Doug,

It sure does look a cracking hole.

When playing shots near UK railway lines I understand the best method is to check the train timetable before you play your shot. This is because UK trains have been known to run late so if you play your shot when the train is due to pass it's probably not going to be there!

Jeff,

The 8th at Narin & Portnoo is a great choice, definitely a fun hole, might be more than 325 yds though, but what the hell. The 1st at N&P is a pretty good starting hole and I think that's under 325 yds.

The hole with the high tee at Cruit Island is the 7th. Cool hole. Indeed, numerous cool holes at Cruit.

The 13th on the OTM course at Rosapenna might be pretty good choice too, must be 325 yds or thereabouts.

James Boon -

I am surprised you didn't mention the 12th at Brora. That is a good one too. Nice rumpled fairway and a green that is a tough target in the wind.

Thomas,
I left out the name of the course.
I was referring to the 6th/15th at Carradale.
There is a really cool back tee on the hole that you play on one of the go rounds, though the beauty of the hole is the way the green is angled and tucked into a hill and some heather/rock outcropping.

7 at Cruit I think is lot longer than 325, but I've never hit a good drive there so I'm not sure-have never played it with a scorecard.
I remember quite a few cool short par 4's on the relief course at RCD
