Which architect's course do you choose?
« on: January 10, 2016, 12:19:16 PM »
Imagine you have to make an immediate departure for a previously unannounced trip, giving you no time to do your normal golf course research and find a place to play. However, upon arrival at your destination, you're flooded with offers from friendly locals to host you for a round. The invites include courses designed by:

  • Ross
  • Mackenzie
  • Perry Maxwell
  • Strantz
  • Pete Dye
  • Tillinghast
  • Raynor
  • Langford
You know nothing about these courses other than their architect. Assuming you can't add days to your trip and play all of the courses in this amazing town, whose course do you choose and why? Is there another architect whose course you would choose above all those listed?

I would be careful about confusing quality of design vs. personal preferences.

I would likely prefer Mackenzie slightly over the next group which would include Ross, Maxwell, Raynor and Langford. Strantz and Dye would be among my last choices.....once again, out of personal preference. Limited experiences with anyone on this list will sway decisions as well. For instance, I have yet to play a Strantz.

They're the same thing. Quality of design just sounds more objective than admitting we're all just subjectively deciding what we like best.

As you mention, lack of experience with an architect will influence people differently. From the list, I'd choose Tillinghast first simply because I've seen less of his work than the others, and I'd like to see more.

It's interesting. Under Jason's scenario, my first thought was "Okay - which architect is least likely to disappoint?". And my second thought/answer was "Any architect currently working and posting on this board".

I think Strantz would offer the most unique experience so I'd probably play there.  My "safe" bet would be Raynor because I always love his work.  If this town was on the coast I would select Mackenzie because he probably secured the best piece of property and put in some stellar coastal holes prior to regulations preventing him from doing so.

Man, this is hard because you don't know which course you are getting and of course...its the courses which are most important..not the archies.

I want to say Langford, but I am guessing much of his stuff just isn't what it should be...too risky.  I spose the same is true of Maxwell.  So, I would probably plop for a Raynor from this list.

Jason,

If the town wasn't in California, probably MacKenzie.

Travis--

But, as Sean indicates, I'd really want to know which courses are available.  Though I'm sort of a Travis-nut, I am aware of regions where I'd select the Ross or the available Travis course.

And, since I have not played a MacKenzie course, I'd probably select that, instead of an available Travis, or whomever else's course might be available.

Or, it could be that one of the available courses, by anyone of the named archies, is one that consistently receives good reviews on GCA, or is nationally ranked.  I might choose that course, based on factors beyond architect.

Quite right in mentioning shapland but I would also choose to play Abercrombies as the ones aber did are just a joy to play and make me smile all the way round.

Not knowing the course is the key to the question.  What architect do you have the best chance of getting an exceptional course?  As much as I love Ross his portfolio is huge and hence the chance of getting a great course are minimized.  I would likely go with Tillinghast or Mackenzie...

 8)  Youngest dead guy... Strantz.. beyond Tot Hill and Tobacco Road, would like to see more about what he did, and think about what he might have drawn from his mind's eye in the future...

then I'd go for Mackenzie and Raynor

Jason, for me it is Raynor. Playing a Raynor course is like catching up with an old friend in person and seeing how their life is going. I know kind of what to expect, but I am always a little suprised when I actually see them in person.

Let's phrase this another way, which of the following courses would you play first if given a one day invite:

Seminole
  • Northwood
  • Twin Hills
  • True Blue
  • Bulle Rock
  • Oak Hills
  • Blue Mound
  • Harrison Hills
  • Now swap in a whole new set of courses for the architects.  Does it change your answer?

Honestly, I don't think I've ever had to make the choice that today I was going to play a Langford over a Tillinghast.  Its just not a real world question.  I may have opted between two particular courses, but the choice had very little to do with the overall portfolios of each of the architects.

Interesting. If I had played just Tobacco Road I would be eager to see more Strantz. But if I had only played Tot Hill it wouldn't pique my interest to play more of his work.

Just looking at the thread title, my first thought was Pete Dye - mostly because I've enjoyed most of his courses.  Looking at the list, I said Mike Strantz - same reason.
Then I got thinking about which architect's courses I haven't played.  I looked at each one's course list and discovered I have played at least a couple by each architect except Langford.  I choose Langford.
That's my reasoning and my choice.

The thing about the list of architects is that it is a list of old and new.

I would go with Maxwell because I have not played any of his courses and so it would be a new experience for me.

I would not pick Ross because there are many Ross courses that are just ok.

I am not sure why Langford is on the list because as he is not like the others. But tell me why Langford should be on this list?
