Re:How skilled do you need to be to play Pinehurst #2?

Patrick,
It's more a lack of knowledge pertaining to etiquette than it is a feeling of entitlement on the part of new players, they just don't know their responsibilities.
Anyway you look at it, it's never an ideal situation when recreational players mix with more serious players. It gets worse when the cost of the round is $250.00+.

Peer pressure has always worked at private clubs. Well, maybe not always but laggards, along with whiners, helicopter pilots, etc., don't contribute to slow play as their usual onesome can keep up with most groups ahead of them.

Quote

Matt Massei the director of golf at Pinehurst says in the latest issue of Putterboy:

"It takes a lot of skill, physically, emotionally and mentally.  No. 2 tests every facet of your game.  That's part of what makes it so special."

Is this a dangerous and misguided statement....

Go figure?   ::)

If Massei hoped to adress slow play, I'd think that there would be a better way.  To golfers who are inclined to ignore etiquette, most are too obtuse to "catch" his point anyway.

JakaB--

***Without reading Putterboy***, I am skeptical of your reaction to Matt's quote.  If nothing else, it is a ringing endorsement of the course.  You and others have inferred that there was an ulterior motive in play but on the surface I don't see it.

I'm sure others on this site have used the same quote to describe their Top 5 favorite courses.

I think your interpretation is a bit dangerous.

erichunter,

Simply let me know your address either publically or privately and I will send you my copy of Putterboy.  My only condition is that once you read the arcticle you honestly critique if I was correct.

I am positive of my convictions and can live without my precious copy.
