Cherokee Plantation?
« on: December 25, 2015, 09:52:27 PM »
Watched this episode of Shell's WWG for the first time at Cherokee Plantation. When I went to get more info on the course the internet took me to an article titled "Ten courses you will never play." Wonder who on this site has played Cherokee and what you thought about it.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

One of my friends who lives in the low country bought a charity auction package for a day/round there many many years ago. I was invited. We were the only ones on the course. I remember that I liked the back 9 more than I liked the front. If I recall the back 9 was routed around old rice fields with a long walk or shuttle ride between 2 holes. I remember it being subtle in design. But, this was before I became interested in golf architecture. I would jump at the chance to go back. A golf buddy and I ran into Donald Steele at Primland last year and had a great conversation with him about the 3 designs of his that I had played......CP, Primland and Greensboro CC Farm.

I played the course twice a couple of years apart about a decade ago. There had been some modifications during the interval between my play including reversing the nines. Several tees had been added and some chipping areas had been expanded.

I liked the course a lot. Some of the most notable features included;
There are only 28 bunkers, but everyone seems to have a purpose. They are below ground. When you look back down the fairway from a green, you can not see the fairway bunkers.
The greens are crowned somewhat like Pinehurst #2, but smaller.
The course is an easy walk except for a shuttle through the wetlands between two holes.

It is not long but can play very tough because of the demanding greens. I was told that during the Wide World event, the players were having so much trouble that they moved up to the member tees.

The club is extremely private with only a few members. There is very little play. I recommend it to anyone who can find a way to gain access. That will not be easy.

Cherokee Plantation can go for days without play. The design is ok, not great, but is pretty solid. There just aren't any divots.  The biggest reason to try and play it isn't the design but its exclusivity. So if that floats you boat go for it.
