Figured this was coming

Sounds like R&A is going to pull Turnberry because of Trumps rhetoric .  Just like bureaucracies to overreact for fear of someone calling them insensitive . Isn't it about the golf and history . Turnberry is bigger than all the player IMHO

See the other thread that has been going since yesterday. I tend to agree with your sentiments to an extent, that it's about the golf and the history...........which is why they should walk away from Donald. You would know what I mean if you saw the circus he turned the Womens Open into last year.

It's one thing to be insensitive...and quite another to "seriously" propose an American policy banning a religion. Sucks for Turnberry but...

I thought he suggested a hiatus on Muslim immigration until we find a way to better vet...not a permanent ban.

Not a fan of his, but he's taken the conversation to an important place.

Suppose we also should probably put a halt to Christian immigration as well given their presence here in nearly all multiple mass shootings. ::) ::) ::)

We  need to properly  vet ALL visitors and immigrants.
Sadly, Trump has simply taken the conversation to the kneejerk MORON level-with great impact.
He's no doubt a great contributor to further aligning disenfranchised people against us.
Potentially a VERY dark period in our history.

Can anyone seriously imagine Trump as the leader of the free world?
Does anyone feel we'd be safer?

I dislike political correctness, but I dislike ignorant, blowhard, egomaniacs worse.
Very hard for me to believe anyone would patronize a Trump property, but the great thing is it's America and I defend their right to do so.

No ban ever ok in USA  but people are really scared for the first time I can remember. No one trusts the establishment to tell  the truth anymore, so he gets traction . I'm with Sully that he didn't actually say he wants to ban Muslims as citizens . As long as the Dems and Republicans keep us polarized they win , and the government grows irrespective who wins elections.

As to playing at Turnberry , the place is so much bigger than Trump.  Pity to change history to stay  politically correct . Owners come and go , the game remains .

I agree.  FDR actions were much much worse and he ended up on Mt Rushmore.

Ben, ignoring the fact that Mt. Rushmore's construction began six years before FDR went into office, can you please explain what Franklin Roosevelt did that trumps Trump's lobbying to completely circumvent the first amendment and effectively banish an entire religious group from the United States? That's quite a statement and I would love to hear you justify it. To my untrained ear, Trump's rhetoric sounds much more similar to another politician whose reign coincided with FDR's. Please edify me.

Archie,

It's not just because of King Donald's "rhetoric."  It's because, as Geoff Shackelford said: "And ultimately beyond the political and societal debate, this still feels like a situation boiling down to whether, going forward, a tournament will be considered safe and cost effective enough to take to Trump properties in light of his comments (and the tendency of  select radicals targeted by his views to react in unimaginably violent ways).

Japanese internment camps ring a bell?  I believe Trump wanted to prevent Muslims from entering the country which non citizens don't have Constitutional powers that US citizens have.

Archie,

I'm glad you posted this.  I'm tired of people constantly bringing him up when Ran asked people not too.  We once valued people's opinion we strongly disagreed with in the US.  Now that has all changed.

It's hosted 4 Opens in total, and 1 in the last 20 years. Not taking the Open to Turnberry is not much of an issue at all for the R&A.

Now if Trump bought The Old Course Hotel and banned muslims from staying that would cause the R&A a serious problem!

Fortunately, I live in a country where the American Constitution does not apply, where we are free to recognise that freedom comes with responsibility and the repression of other people's freedoms is a repression of all of our freedoms. The haters will always throw 'political correctness gone mad' at every situation but nothing can be more politically correct than an outdated constitution which prevents modern laws which could, in turn, prevent the incitement and execution of racial violence from white terrorists. Trump is a racist little scumbag who will inevitably be on the wrong side of history. I'm afraid over here we at least try to offer up some kind of meritocracy and modernity, meaning a loudmouth and a message which can only be sold to the average knuckle dragger isn't something we're happy to turn a blind eye to.

Well done to the R&A for finding a spine. Now, about that golf ball......

Trump is no spring chicken anymore as he'll be 70 in 6 months.

I suspect if the R&A takes a 20 year haitus on Turnberry,  Trump will likely not be running the show by then..

I think the R&A made the right move without needing to say "we'll never go back"...its just a "pause".

Neal (sic)

You must have been in a parallel universe when the Women's Open was held at Turnberry earlier this year.  My wife and I spent a day there and there was no circus.  In fact it was one of the best golf tournaments that I have ever attended (partially, to be sure, because there were hardly any spectators there) and those of us who were there had incredible access to the course and the players.  The only downer was the fact that the Scots, who some believe actually invented our great game, were pitifully underrepresented at what was a great "Major" event.........
