OT - Replica Hickory Balls:

Gents


I am just getting started at hickory and have been using the Wilson duo ball low compression ball.  I want to also try some replica balls.  I found McIntyre and their Oiumet ball seems a reasonable balance of historic relevance, playability and price.  I was planning to try those but before I did I thought I would ask others for recommendations, trade offs and what to expect.   I welcome any input.  Many thanks to the group

Welcome to hickory golf...


I have only played the McIntrye replicas (RTJ and Ouimet) with hickories - I have been pretty happy with them, no real complaints.  I played them exclusively on my trip to Ireland this past August - I will say I loved the expression and commentary from the caddies from Ballybunion to Royal Country Down when we pulled up with hickory clubs and these golf balls.

I have played a reasonable bit of hickory golf over the last several years and I higher recommend the Mcintyre Ouimet ball. It plays well and holds up over many rounds. I have only seen one of them split when hit by a player who swings really hard. They are easy on the clubs as well and I think that is very important. And frankly for about the cost of a dozen Pro V's, they are hard to beat. I have also tried their Varden ball, but found that is was significantly shorter off of the hickories.

I played the Oiumet balls today, until I lost them.  They're good and fine but aren't anything special relative to hickory clubs. I'm using Snell balls with my regular clubs and they work with my hickories, too.

Because replica balls are not wound balls, but rather remolded Callaway Supersofts or Wilson Duos the only difference comes from the dimple patterns. Performance wise it seems to be a distinction without a difference. That said I do carry a mesh pattern ball in my bag as the most often asked question I get is "what kind of ball do you use?"

Are 1960s Dunlop 65s Slazenger 1.62 size any good for hickory? There are plenty of opportunities to buy these at about £1 per ball at auctions.
