HOLIDAYS @ HUNTERCOMBE...31 December...All Welcome
« on: December 10, 2015, 04:21:29 AM »
I booked Huntercombe for 31 December...8 golfers (can push the number if need be).  The plan is 10AM breakfast with golf to follow.  Cost is £45.  Huntercombe plays quick which makes it easy to get home for New Year's libations.  Let me know if you are game.  So far we have

Sadly I have to bail.  Will be celebrating  in Liverpool.

Now I'm sure John Lennon is gone, it's safe to make my first visit.

Happy New Year everyone.
Let's make GCA grate again!

Dear Sean

I am taking a friend to the 'Combe for a game tomorrow c 10.15ish, and I'll certainly try and introduce myself to you and the rest of the GCA posse. Forecast for tomorrow not looking too bad at all, although even Huntercombe will probably be a bit wet under foot after recent downpours.
All best Richard

Soft southerner.  We played a winter knockout match yesterday morning in the teeth of Frank.  Madness.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Sorry i could not join the golf on 31st. Hope a good time was had by all/ you were well looked after/course in reasonable shape.  The club has started to make some decent progress in tidying up/opening up the course albeit a long way to go.

Yes, in the end 6 of us made it out during the small window between dire and dreadful weather.  The course is shaggy with fairways narrowed to the point of silliness, but it was amazingly dry under-foot.  The club looked after us very well during what was a surprisingly busy day.  I will take the day back to Huntercombe this year.

Philip, what's your view on all the new bunkers? I know Elys have built them; do you know who did the design?

I hope they haven't turned any of the cool hollows into bunkers.

As usual we go on these great trips and do nothing but play golf!    Changed that in May, actually skipped a round at North Berwick to spend a day exploring Edinburgh.  Back to NBWL the next day.  The Royal Mile has many good pubs!

So far as I can tell, there is no major difference in the bunkering...I only notice that it will be higher profile.  I think Adam is referring to the few bunkers in the hollows, but they were there previously.

Adam i have not been at the course for a month or so and have therefore not seen the bunkering work. Sounds like i need to go and take a look!

My understanding is as Sean suggests - a case of touching up existing bunkers ( of which there are only 12 i think?) rather than building anything new. As for who advised on the work, i think Hawtree still consults at Huntercombe but i might be wrong.

Very  nice to meet Sean and Adam and James, albeit briefly, and sorry I couldn't join in with the actual game(s). No new Huntercombe bunkers planned - just significant refurbishment of the existing thirteen. We had an email before Xmas saying 'The first phase of the bunker renovation is complete, with all 13 sand bunkers re-shaped and new drainage installed.  It was hoped that the Blinder (rubber crumb) layer would be laid this week but due to recent wet weather delaying work at other courses, our external contractor is unable to visit before Christmas.  The revised plan is that they will install the Blinder layer on 4th/5th January and following this our greens staff will start to lay the new turf in and around the bunkers.' Hope that makes sense to all, and Happy New Year!
