Shell's WWOG Available On Youtube
« on: December 09, 2015, 10:28:29 PM »
The current thread on Nelson vs. Littler at Pine Valley got me looking at what vintage SWWOG episodes might be available at youtube.com.  Here is what I found:

Tony Lema vs. Robert de Vicenzo on a course in Greece, filmed a few moths before Lema's fatal accident.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-MBUF_gw_8

Billy Casper vs. Harry Bradshaw at Portmarnock:

part 1 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-yk2oL_g2w

part 2 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMyM8Z6I79M

Al Geiberger vs. George Knudson at Victoria GC:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dL6oSMgB-ig

Bob Charles vs. Bob Goalby at Paraparaumu (only 10 minutes long)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3-DhhoKfcs

Sam Snead vs. Bob Goalby at Phildelphia CC (an episode of "All-Star Golf")

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOHu6MQBB-s

There are others episodes, but they are cut into 5 to 10 minutes segments. There are also a couple of episodes from the revival of the show 10 or so years ago.

Thanks for this.  I will now get nothing done for the next week.  I would love a revival of WWOG similar to that seen in the late 90s / early 2000s.  My favorite episode was the Geiberger/Knudson match from Victoria G.C...a very underrated course in a beautiful setting.

I'm with you Scott, Victoria is a wonderful little course I've been to twice in the past three years.  A couple of notes:

The trees were much smaller, but you could see in places like the right side of #1 fairway where a straight row of firs had been planted and would be monotonous forty years later.

The trees that now pinch the fairway on the left side of the great short par 4 #5 aren't there, it's a much easier tee shot than today.

#7 was a tough par 3 from a tee high on the right side rather than the short par 4 played today from a tee 100 yards farther back.

Off to bed now but will pick this up later!

Demaret and Sarazen were very suave!

One of only 5 courses in Greece (at last count), Glyfada did make it into the original World Atlas of Golf book. Thanks, I'll check this episode out-haven't seen it before.

Wait till you see Gene Sarazen v Henry Cotton at St Andrews in 1962, you won't believe it. Unfortunately whilst I know it exists it has not yet been uploaded to youtube or available on DVD.

Adrian -

I have a copy of Sarazen vs. Cotton at TOC on DVD. If I recall correctly, both were in their mid-50's when it was filmed, yet both guys looked very old, especially when compared to how youthful so many guys on the senior tour look these days.

Ditto here Scott. When evening golf was hard to come by I treasured those shows. I really liked Jack Whittaker, I felt like I was visiting my Grandpa.  Would love to see it come back in the same low key classy way. Unfortunately a modern version would probably be hosted by Joe Rogan  with analysis by Natalie Gulbis.

One of my favorites was at World Woods Pine Barrens - I believe it was Mickelson and David Toms?
