Saturday, Dec. 12
-- Jones Brothers

I will be excited to see this one - its for personal reasons - but I really hope they've got to a good place together
Some things are more important than golf.

I'll ask the same question I asked the previous ones ....

Who would you like to see?

Mine is Martin Ebbert, he has some really interesting work going on including Turnberry and Royal Portrush that is far more interesting to me than some of the other projects that will get discussed.

Ian:

You should really send these ideas to Matty G a month or two BEFORE the shows, instead of after they've made their choices.

But, good luck convincing TV to make many against-the-grain choices.  The Joneses and Fazios aren't building much these days, that I know about, but they still have their place under the tree at Augusta, and they still get included in these round-ups.

Mike Young,

An architect and course owner.  Refreshing to see someone own something they have created.  Also I can afford to play his courses.

I'd like to see, on the Monday of such weeks (the "preview' episode), Matt and Geoff making quick work of the overview and the rest of the time focused on where the rubber hits the road, ie a "why architecture matters' discussion with course owners/operators eg Chris C, Dave M and committee chairs. In other words, before celebrating the art and craft, give me faces and people and reasons to care about why it matters.

Tillinghast isn't building anything new either, but they are still doing a segment on him.  Interested to hear Fazio and the Jones brothers have to say.

Rees was in the Bay Area last week inspecting a course he's involved with and is quoted saying he has 30 courses he is currently working on.

That was quite an article.

LOL. The writer is quite elderly and loves Rees.

In this case Rees has basically licensed his name. Marc Logan and Greenway have total control of the project.

With that said it does resemble a sand belt course and is unlike anything Rees has ever built.

You're too good to us, Howard.  When I learned of this week-long segment at 0800 this morning, I thought I'd missed today's segment.  Thanks for sharing it with us.  Cheers.

Ian:

Keith Foster would be fun.  He seems to have decided to do nothing but renovations, but his new courses in my area are so, so good.  Both seemed to have an extended labor before birth, but both worth it.

That was quite an article.

You have to love it when they throw the "minimalist design" phase in just a few lines before mentioning they brought in 47,000 truckloads of dirt to raise the entire course by 10-15 feet.

The website also claims it will be the only Rees Jones designed course in the east bay. Poppy Ridge is is an NCGA owned course less then 30 miles away, and I am quite positive it was also designed by the "most famous living golf course architect in the world."

It became patently obvious to me during the promos this morning that "minimalist design" and "minimalism" are used as marketing terms akin to "links" golf. It's great that GCA seems to be shifting toward minimalism, but have we really accomplished anything if architects are able to champion their courses as "minimalist" when it really isn't. More importantly, does it even matter?

So, what if the project was taking in the dirt and getting paid to do it....thus, reducing the construction costs while improving interest in the land? Then, does it have any minimalist tendencies? Or just fiscally smart?

100% in agreement.

For what it's worth, I swung by the Alameda project last month to have a peek, and the earthworks actually look pretty decent. Some natural looking hillocks were constructed which actually work their way into the line of play, rather than merely framing and containing like so many hapless mounds we have all witnessed. But, then again, there is still much to be done and I was merely peering from the periphery. So,  I will keep my hopes low to allow for the potential of a pleasant surprise. It's a shame they didn't scrap the original crappy routing. I recall some unnecessarily long transitions for a flat site with a bit of extra elbow room.

Thread jack over.

Is there a new course going in on the old naval station?  I had heard rumors about it, but wasn't sure if it actually got off the ground.

That's been dead for a while. It was going to be a Kyle Phillips course but the recession and government ineptitude killed it.

Thanks for posting that Doug,

I'm glad they didn't  rip up the north course, its a fun course with some interesting holes, the South was less so....

Did anyone else catch Shack noting that the Cape Hole concept basically started at Mid Ocean?

Shack is incorrect... Mid-Ocean was completed in 1921. Tilly wrote about the "Cape hole" design and defined it from his perspective in 1915-16 as one of a series of small articles which he would then bind together and publish again in his 1917 advertising booklet "Planning A Golf Course."

In it he asked the question, "What is the difference between a dog-leg and an elbow?" After making a comparison and defining both he wrote, "There is still a third variation, where a corner is formed by the green itself, usually by the encroachment of a hillside or sandy waste, and this type is known as a Cape hole."
