Mentioned a few times already, but Reigate Heath. 9 proper holes, but with different teeing areas, can stretch to 18, and under the allotted yardage. I enjoyed it, and for £25 on the weekend, thought it was excellent value.

Although they are putting in new "Tiger" tees to lengthen the course, Fortrose & Rosemarkie comes in comfortably under 5,800 yards from the current white/yellow tees.

One of the most remarkable settings (and routings) for a golf course I have ever seen.

Might be the course I haven't seen that I would most like to play.

Fortrose & Rosemarkie is fabulously fun golf. It is burned into my memory, however, by the fact that it was the location for a disastrous attempt to turn my Staffordshire bull terrier x boxer Pugwash into a “golf” dog.
Pockets bulging with biscuits, I got the brindle menace to the turn without mishap though he made it quite clear — bribery notwithstanding — that he was no labrador.
I lashed him to my bag at the 9th, stood to make my putt when the corner of my eye caught a cat making down the 10th (to this day I don’t fully comprehend cat and golf course, what the hell was it doing there!). I looked at Pugwash, his ears were pointing forwards, he looked at me. Time stood still. Then it didn’t. Dog, bag, clubs set off in a blur….
I never tried the experiment again but Fortrose & Rosemarkie I must.

For those who've seen both how does Fortrose and Rosemarkie compare to (Dawlish) Warren in Devon? Both are shortish length courses on narrow sand spits (and I believe dolphins can be seen from both, although maybe at F&M in more frequency).

Been a while since I played F&R, and even longer since Warren...Fortrose is quite a bit more refined from what I can remember, with a touch more contour/interest - certainly a level above. I'm not sure you ever really feel like you are playing on a spit for more than a couple of holes at Dawlish.


(F&R is 5,893 yards from the white tees, and 6,085 from the black!)

The old course in the middle of the racecourse at Royal Ascot is certainly NLE, the club having built a new course across the road.  I don't think that it was a  Fowler though - more like a JH Taylor.
