GB & I sub-5,800 yard courses...!?

I'm sure there has been a thread on this in the last couple of years, but can't find it?


I have ten or so off the top of my head (mostly sub-5,200 yards interestingly), but am looking for suggestions. Must be less than 5,800 yards from the back set of tees, preferably more than nine holes, in GB & I and worth playing.


(There are quite a lot of cool courses - Kington, New Zealand... - around 5,800 to 6,000 yards, but these do not count!  ;) )

The daft thing is, I've played Cavendish countless times, but it never feels like a short course!

I would really like to see Cavendish in a dry summer. Every time I've played it, the course has been pretty soft -- it does rain quite a lot up there -- and I suspect it'd be truly fantastic if properly firm. Though I can't imagine how hard 15 would be if the green were seriously firm.

Donal I was just posting that!
backed off to do the Meters to yards exact conversion
5300 meters =5796 yards
 so the usual 10% would've made it 30 yards too long

That is hard - I had 4 course spring to mind. 1 (Windermere) has been mentioned. The other three are just over off the white tees but under off the yellows:

Boat of Garten (5876 white / 5648 yellow)
Frilford Heath Green (5937 / 5662)
West Cornwall (5850 / 5679)

How bout Stranhan Course at Players Club...I don't know the yardage, but its well under 5800.  Cullen too is miles under 5000.

I have never seen Cavendish remotely firm, but I don't think the design can really handle firm conditions. I am apt to think Dr Mac built a more aerial style course to suit the climate.

Although they are putting in new "Tiger" tees to lengthen the course, Fortrose & Rosemarkie comes in comfortably under 5,800 yards from the current white/yellow tees.

One of the most remarkable settings (and routings) for a golf course I have ever seen.

As well as Cullen, that Sean menationed, a few more courses up north that are conmfortably under the 5,800 yard cut-off and include Newtonmore, Kingussie (both about 5,500 yards), Grantown on Spey, and Huntly. I'd be happy to recommend any of that lot for a bounce game on holiday. Down in the central belt there's Whinhill at c.5,500 yards which is definitely worth a play if you enjoy old time golf.

I'll throw in my home course Epping, which has several interesting holes, if not worth a serious detour.

Par 68, 5434 yards.




On checking the distance online I came across this review.

Everybody has a theory until they get punched in the face  ;) . 


If Cavendish were properly firm many holes would be like playing pin ball.  #2, 4, 9, maybe 10, 11, 12, 15, 16 & maybe 18.  Thankfully, there is always middle ground, but even this modest goal needs cooperative weather.  A few holes which would be very cool if really firm are 3, 8, 13 & 14.

Now hands up who else had to go check club websites to see what the yardage of the course was ? I've a general idea how long a course is but I suspect that if you asked me the yardage of a course straight after I'd played it I'd struggle to get to within 300 yards of the answer. Anyone else in the same boat ?
