CGC definitely has aspirations of holding a major, and this is the first step. All the USGA boys were out when they were in town in 2012 and laid out a timetable of holding a few lesser events in an effort to secure the big show. I would guess a Senior Open is next.
Kerry Haigh from PGA said it would be a great Ryder Cup course when it held the Senior PGA in 2010, so they are pursuing all angles from the PGA as well.
I'm not sure that any course at altitude would be right for an open, but CGC's layout and infrastructure would be able to hold the circus easily. There haven't been too many majors in the mountain time zone so maybe it's time to get it on.
