[Joe Bausch]

Evans was a long-time golf writer in Philadelphia, going back to around 1909 with the Public Ledger.  From there he went to the Evening Public Ledger, then after Tillinghast stopped writing for The Record in early 1919, Evans more or less took over his role of writing a lengthy article on golf just about every Sunday. 


It was tedious collecting these off microfilm over the years while at the Free Library doing my research on Cobb's Creek.  I've attempted to create a decent searchable index for the 150+ articles.  So you want to start at the link below to find an article you want to read (some articles did not get reproduced well on microfilm).


There is some really good stuff by Evans as he seemed to know Donald Ross well, and frequently wrote in detail on Pine Valley.

My gosh Joe, the collection is fantastic.


After Tilly quit the Record in 1919, was most of his writing for Golf Illustrated? (Maybe the question should be directed to Phil Young.)

Over the years I've found myself increasingly grateful for Joe and his incredible research unearthing contemporaneous first-hand articles by Philadelphians like Evans and Tillnghast. 

These articles paint a real-time, detailed chronology of the people and events involved in creating some of our greatest courses.  Without them we'd be simply left with our own incomplete interpretations and imaginative suppositions from the partial and often misleading fragments of history that existed prior.

For instance, Tilly's early 1913 articles really spell out clearly both the details and timing of what was going on at Pine Valley well prior to Colt's involvement, which is further summarized in this 1915 article.

One thing these Evans' articles reminded me of, which I had forgotten, was that Whitemarsh Valley was to have had the 1918 National Amateur but the war caused the cancellation.  Talk was they would get the 1921 tourney, but they didn't.


I wonder how the 'trajectory' of Whitemarsh Valley might have changed if they had hosted the 1918 National Amateur.  Fun to ponder...
