I saw the below link on the Trevose website, that Mackenzie & Ebert have delivered their initial report on changes to be made to the Championship & Headland courses. I haven't played either course, but thought it was really neat to read their analysis and proposed changes. With some other big projects happening at the moment, I wonder how much time they will spend on site.

Thoughts from those who have played the courses?

Interesting. I guess the answer to fixing a hole is to add bunkers and reshape the greens.  I am a fan of good bunkers but these may be too penal.
I played the course about ten years ago and was disappointed by it and really don't remeber much about it. I thought it was a missed opportunity, although I didn't think the terrain was all that compelling to begin with.

They have great soil and there are some nice bits around 3 and 4, that is about it though.


To me it needs a complete re-do, get rid of those cross hedges and get the bulldozers in. There is enough elevation change to chop that landscape up and create something really good. If you got a good shaper in there, he could plus or minus that to 2 metres and create some proper interest.

So fairway lines around bunkers have to be changed so that balls will stop in the rough before getting to the bunker?
If you are going to add fairway bunkers, why not add then in the fairway, instead of creating rough around them?

I was a tremendous fan of Trevose (perhaps the role of expectations in this judgment?).  Exceptional tie-ins of greens to surrounds. 

I'm somewhat shocked at the suggestions re the 13th.  It has to be rare that saving bunkers make a hole better (and I can't see how they do in this case, either).

As much as the good people down at Trevose are so welcoming, unfortunately the course just doesn't stand up to the courses along that stretch of coast line IMO. It is a wonderful spot but the course just lacks that something

I feel the same about mentioning affiliations!


As to Trevose, nice to see revisions to the 9th and 13th, the two poorest holes on the course IMO. Some of the other holes are pretty fine though. The course was previously beefed-up a bit prior to the Brabazon Trophy being held there in 2008.

No. No historic analysis. Nobody seems to care....  at least they are not building revetted pot bunkers

Why do you think no historical analysis was done? Time and money? Or do you think that M&E didn't think there was enough merit in the design of the course as it originated?

I don't know about Frank, but I personally think the club is not interested.

Isn't Trevose family owned and run as a business/livelihood (rather than being a traditional members owned club)?


Nice place though what the main 18-hole course, the lessor spec 9-holer, the par-3 course, on-site swimming and tennis, nearby surfing plus loads of on-site accommodation. And the clubhouse has one of the best views in GB golf.
