Last Call for Photos - Confidential Guide Volume 3
« on: November 20, 2015, 06:37:02 PM »
With the main body of Volume 3 now edited for space, and many photos received, I have a pretty good sense of what I'm missing as far as artwork.  I appreciate all the submissions to date, and encourage further photos on the list of courses below.

Same deal as before:  if I use one of your photos, you get a free autographed copy of the book, and the ability to purchase more books at the wholesale price.

Please send your images to confguidegolf@gmail.com.  Please note that last time around I received about 400 emails with submissions, and there is not the time to respond to each and every one.  I will let you know in the next two months if I'm leaning toward using one of your photos.

The updated list of courses:

Northeast:  CC of Buffalo, Burning Tree, Cabot Links, Columbia (MD), Deepdale, Engineers, Forsgate, Taconic, CC of Troy.

Great Lakes:  Black Sheep, Erin Hills, Fowlers Mill, Giants Ridge, Northland, Rochester MN, plus all courses in Ontario and Quebec

West of the Mississippi:  Wakonda, Tetherow, Waverley (OR)

What is the max number of photos per course you'd want submitted?

John:

At most I'll use one photo per course, so it doesn't make sense to submit more than one or two.

If you have specific holes in mind for the Canadian courses, please pass along which ones and I'll see if I have a photo worth sending.

Will you go to Montreal before publishing?

Well, Tom certainly won't be playing golf here for the next 5 months!  :P

I don't see them on the list but hope you plan to see (or have seen) Victoria GC and Royal Colwood in Victoria, BC, a couple of gems.

Tom, so many posters here take such wonderful photos, so you'll no doubt have plenty to choose from. But for me even if you just limited these to photos from Jon C, Joe B, and Benjamin L you'd have a treasure trove of outstanding images. Man, those guys make great golf holes look, well, *obviously* great.
Peter
PS - that list of courses reminds me yet again that whatever else CG does and is meant to do, it serves/will serve as a terrific "historical record"

Bill:

I've seen Victoria Golf Club, and have great photos of my own for that one.  I didn't see Royal Colwood when I was there, can't remember now if Darius or Ran has seen it.

Yes, I've already received a huge cache of photos from Jon Cavalier, and he's only down to Maidstone on my list so far!  Putting together a book has never been so easy as it is today ...

Tom, I'm assembling a bunch of photos for you and should be able to send them in the next few days. Quick question: I tend to prefer my black-and-white pictures (and I have many for the courses on your list that I've played), but if you definitely don't want/plan to use any of those in your book, I won't send them. Just let me know. Thanks.

Victoria is one of my favorite courses, love those holes along the water.  I've got a couple I'll send.

I'm not likely to use any black and white photos in the book.  I might make an exception for an exceptional photo, but you shouldn't send a lot of them.

Tom: Will you be contacting the courses and/or architects directly to request photos?  I'm sure they would be glad to help and would have access to large libraries.

Wade:

I prefer not to go that route.  If we are using the same images that the courses [or architects] are using for promotional purposes, the book is not only less original, but some might wonder whether our reviews were influenced by a relationship.  I've only made one or two exceptions to this rule so far, when there was just no other source of photos for a whole section of the book.

Tom...any courses among the above where your pics are lacking?

As opposed to sending 5 pics times 50 courses...would love to help if you have any gaps!

John:

You can send all the crude stick drawings you like.  Maybe I'll publish the funniest of them.  :)  Suggest you look to Patric Dickinson's book, A Round of Golf Courses, for inspiration.

Pete, Brad and Others:

I've got the midsection of the book mostly laid out now and have about 80% of the pictures I will need.  I was working on a list of the courses where we still need help, but had to leave for Europe before I finished it.  Will try to post the list by the end of January.  Thanks to all who have sent their photos, I did have a lot to choose from again this year.

Tom -

There are a few clubs listed that have been professionally photographed.  We have the low resolution images for those clubs and can forward to you.  If chosen then you can get permission from those individuals.  I know Winchester has rights to their photos already.  Larry Lambrecht photographed the CC of Buffalo but I am not 100% sure of their arrangement.  I am sure you can talk to Larry about CCB.  Rolling Green had a number of photos taken after the bunker renovation in 2008 which we can forward to you.  Mannie's was just photographed this past Fall but they have not seen the proofs yet.  I let them know of your search and will check back in with them next month.  The timing for Salem CC is tough.  They just went through an extensive green expansion program this Fall in preparation for the '17 Sr. Open.  They will not be photo ready until mid summer.  There is a real difference on the course now with the expansions.

Was at Lancaster yesterday and talked to their super about the call for images.  We have used images of the 3rd hole for
promotional purposes and will therefore not send over.  Will talk to their GM about any images that might be available from
the Women's Open.

Will you work with a DropBox folder where we can dump a bunch of photos for you to look through?

On another note, please say hello to Don.  Has been way too long since I last spoke to him.

Is that Brookside Canton or Brookside Columbus (I would assume Canton but one never knows).

You are welcome to any of my Moraine pics:

They are from 2008, prior to the restoration work that the club is going through. Not sure what you're looking for and I don't want to submit all of them, but if you're willing to scroll them please feel free.

Dropbox is a good idea too...

Tom, what's your drop-dead deadline on photos? Are you still in need of a handful?

Steve:

The book will go to the printers on June 1st.  But I'd like to have photo submissions from outside picked out by the end of March, since if we can't find a good photo for a particular spot in the text, I will have to rearrange the text layout from that point on, half a page at a time.  So, nobody is going to TAKE any more pictures of any of these courses that I'm likely to use ...

... unless someone sends in a better photo of a particular course at the last minute, as I received for Askernish in Volume 1.  Those are easy to replace right up until the June 1 deadline.

If so, I will go searching in my files for them.
