Reverse short drop-shot par-3's
« on: November 05, 2015, 01:34:20 PM »
The current ongoing thread about drop-shot par-3's got me thinking about reverse short drop-shot par-3's, ie short par-3's where the green is higher than the tee.

The 5th and 10th at Painswick are two holes that come to mind as examples.

Perhaps not so photogenic as those holes that play downhill from tee to green, unless you're viewing them from behind the green or from mid-point in the case of the examples mentioned above.

I’ve been reading GCA for a while now, but this is my first post. That said, I’m pretty sure the word “quirk” appears here more than any other website, and the epitome of quirk to me is the ninth hole at Fallbrook Golf Club north of San Diego. It’s barely 100 yards, straight uphill and squeezed between a street, the cart path leaving the first tee box and maintenance sheds. I wouldn’t say it’s a good hole, but it’s not necessarily the pushover its distance would suggest. And it’s most definitely quirky. And dare I say, kinda fun?

Maybe the ultimate example was the old Cliff hole at Biarritz.  Here's a photo from a great GCA thread titled "The Original Biarritz":

I renominate the 15th at Alderbrook in Tillamook, Oregon. Like hitting the flat roof of a four story building.

Lu Lu Country Club hole #4 is my favorite. Can't tell you how many times I've thought I knocked it in only to find it 10' long or short

Now that is a fun (albeit challenging) golf hole!

13 and 16 at Crail Balcomie, two of the great uphill par 3s in the world in a four hole stretch.

Veenker - I think it is the 2nd now but they have changed the hole numbers several times since I played it more regularly.  About 150 yards up a hill to one of the smallest greens I have ever seen.  Miss left and you are hitting up a steep slope.  Miss right and you could be in a creek depending on how much rain has fallen lately.  It is an enjoyable way to get up a steep ridge.

There's one of these at the 500 Club, in Phoenix. #11. Under 150, I think, but straight uphill. It's a unique and fun challenge.

So steep it plays more like 200.  I like that course which flies well under the radar in far NW Phoenix.

One of the first I played was the 12th at Shadowbrook in NE PA, about 130 yards with about 40-50 feet of elevation change if memory serves.

The Volcano hole at Bedford Springs is a reverse drop off on steroids, and I also recall one at Harlem Valley (NY) that played about 50 yards longer than the 140-some card yardage.   Of course, the one at Bedford is a long par three so probably outside the realm of the original question.

Philadelphia's Walnut Lane has a fairly good example of this type of hole: No. 11. Due to overgrowth, it's extremely narrow from the tee, but you certainly do not want to come up short (or go long)! Hitting the green is a must for an easy par. The below photo is from the Bausch Collection.

I was going to throw in the 1st at Traigh GC and the 1st at Leslie GC but can't get the photo width so hey ho,
Traigh from the tee is seriously uphill at 150 ish yards but so worth it when you get to the green.
Leslie is about 190Y gently uphill to the start of the 10 foot high plateau green, a beast!

Little up hill par 3s are my favourite  holes and I think every course should have one. But they are just so difficult to get right

There used to be a beauty as the first hole on the far paddock at Bonnie Doon in Sydney, but  it didn't survive various renos.

I like no. 15 at Rustic Canyon but not into a three club wind. We chipped one up from the false front and the wind pushed it all the way back down.

I also like no. 12 at Bandon Trails but it is not that much uphill as it is just long at 230 yards.

And no. 2 at Bandon Dunes is a great up hill par 3 with lots of options when the pin is in the back.

I also remember playing no. 9 at Diamond Bar County GC when I was a kid. I don't like no. 9 par 3 holes and an uphill one back to the clubhouse.

We don't have any uphill par 3 holes here in Virginia Beach because it is so flat. In my memory, most skyline greens are par 4s rather than an uphill par 3.
