Bill,

I suppose that's a fair question given the pedigree of Pasatiempo. I went into both rounds with eyes wide open and played them a day apart so it was a fair comparison. I think the greens at Pasa are incredible- my first Mackenzie greens and I felt as if I was on hallowed ground. I am no fan of the 16th green but was otherwise thrilled to deal with the needed delicate approaches and the baffling putting lines. But there is no getting around the fact there are some less than stellar tee to green moments there - e.g. 6 and 7.

Cal Club, having undergone a restoration from Kyle Philips around 2006, blew the course up with new turf, new bunkers and new routing. I'm not sure how the restored bunkers compared with Mackenzie's originals but the entire deal was exceptional. The scale, sweep and undulatory topography were more captivating for me - not sure what else to say about it. The Pasa greens were more remarkable yes - but the whole package? For me, I'd have to say Cal Club.

I have to say I probably misinterpreted the original question.  I was thinking more "biggest pleasant surprise" instead of "Best", which in my case probably goes to Muirfield somewhat by default.

I played fewer courses for the first time this year, but revisited many great courses for the first time in many, many years(i.e. didn't remember many holes)-mostly in competitive events (Engineers,Huntington CC, The Creek, Fenway, Metropolis, Deepdale, Elmwood,North Shore CC, Portmaronack- 9 holes injury :'( )

My first go rounds in order of preference
1.Camberly Heath
2.Greencastle (biggest surprise)
3.Forfar
4.Panmure
6.Ocala GC
6.Woodmere
7.Port Jefferson
8. Arcola
9.Purchase

I can thoroughly appreciate Royal Dornoch, Bethpage Red and anything in St. Andrews - all exceptional first time experiences.
For me this year it was a little more pedestrian - Angeles National in LA, Oak Creek in Irvine, CA and Branson Hills in MO.
Angeles National (Palmer) is situated in a deserty environment just north of LA.  Generous fairways off the tee - a few forced carries into the greens and interesting greens with some movement depending on the pin placement.  Quite a few waste areas and dry arroys.

Oak Creek (Fazio) was a blast.  I played with 3 local high school team members - they were playing from the blues and trying to get ready for a qualifying tournament on the next weekend.  I played from the forward tees and kept the ball in the fairway on every hole.  Drove them crazy.  From what I have seen, this is a fairly typical Fazio course with long grass growing into the edges of the bunkers, water in play around a few greens and undulating greens.  If you are in the LA area, I recommend both courses.

Of the 3 courses recommended in Branson, I chose Branson Hills (used to be Payne Stewart).  A hilly course (different for me since I live in TX) - the downhill holes were great fun - the uphill holes gave me trouble.  I found myself laying-up on a few of the uphill - just couldn't get there with a forced carry over a creek or marsh.  However, I shot well and therefore enjoyed the course.  Pertty straightforward if you can hit in the fairway.

So far this year it has to be a tie between Royal Dorncoh and Muirfield. Totally different landscapes but I enjoyed them equally.

Royal Melbourne West - hardly a surprising nomination! - but with a very honourable mention for Hollinwell, and distinct enthusiasm for both Royal Queensland and Coxmoor. Royal Burgess and Tidworth were my two other newies this year, and again I would be more than happy to have another game at either in the future (especially perhaps in summer at RBGS). For the first time in many decades, not a single seaside course among that new sextet of first-timers.

Revisits to favourites have dominated the year so not many new plays.

Highlights would be -

Best..... as in toughest and most examining challenge - Royal County Down
Best......as in most enjoyable - Portmarnock
Great fun....Annesley at RCD with only 6* clubs.

New Zealand GC.

Walton Heath New, Hayling & Cavendish weren't far behind but New Zealand was definitely something special.

I really enjoyed Sunningdale Old and Somerset Hills, but my favourite from 2015 would have to be Royal County Down. I was first off at 8am, and played alone in a beautiful morning light.

I did a full write up here if anyone is interested in the hole-by-hole breakdown: http://www.graylynloomis.com/royal-county-down-review/

Banff Springs by a nose over Jasper, but both were great golf courses in spectacular settings.  Ran has done reviews of both.

The other courses I played for the first time this year were Coronado (a very nice course, but not in the same league), Torrey Pines North (a great setting and I really liked holes 5-7, but otherwise nothing special [I only played the front 9....in 2:45!]), Potomac Shores (some good holes, but a completely unwalkable routing mess) and Langston (a DC muni that's in not-so-great shape).

Wolf Point was the best course I played for the 1st time this year by a wide margin.  One of the best courses in the country!  Congress Lake would be 2nd, perfect mix of quirk and fun.

Two of the four best courses I have ever played and which I can't choose a best from.  A third in that group of four was a first for me this year and therefore my best first play of the year - Royal Portrush.

In many other years The Golf Club would just have beaten off Moraine for my best first play of the year.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

I played Castle Stuart for the first time last month.  Of the 10 or so new courses I played this year,  it was the best.  Exmoor CC was probably second.
