I get the feeling a lot with plantings. Flowers and really colorful bushes or trees especially. I think the colors play a huge factor, they bring in entirely new textures and change the scale of the landscape completely.

Certain grasslines and mowing patterns clutter the picture for me as well. I find having excessive amounts of cut heights, or overly regulated and stark transitions to be distracting. If you add in a lot of stripes, I can certainly be overwhelmed with all excess lines and edges. This is absolutely visual clutter to me, as it is distracting from the composition.

Honestly, excessive bunkering can cause visual clutter for me as well. Whether it is an egregious amount that over dominant the landscape in the wrong way, or far to much sand that it is dominating the scale, or just way too many wiggly lines that distract from the bigger picture.

 8) ;D

Kirk , I'm with you second picture is quite cluttered.

Paul I'm fine with quirk .

Jaeger , I'm totally in tune with you on clutter , as you enumerated many of my least favorite features in architecture and maintenance.

Kirk

First example is a bit too busy.  Don't need all that sand with water and "dunes" on hand.

Second example is cluttered... a visual mess which I find hard to believe "helps" the hole be "better".

Archie:

We have different definitions for this term.

For me, it's about all the little things:  planted trees and bushes, bad mowing lines, course furniture [yardage markers, tee signs, etc.] that distract the golfers and spoil the beauty of the architecture.  Where we consult, I try to look at the golf holes like a photographer does* and take out anything that clutters up the picture.  You would be surprised at how much difference it makes.

* although I do believe that bunkers should have rakes!

I think the picture test vis a vis clutter is a great benchmark.

I also bet that a non golfer would look at the 18tn tee pictures from St. Andrews and think it looked cluttered as well.  Golfers and non golfers probably have totally different views about man made aesthetics.   But I suspect landscape beauty is more commonly agreed upon.
