Beavertail
« on: October 28, 2015, 07:50:12 PM »
There are a few mentions of Beavertail on this site. It was a 1925 creation of AWT's for Audley Clarke that was built on Conanicut Island, RI (biggest city on the island is Jamestown). If Clarke's name sounds familiar it's because he was also involved in the development  of NGLA and Engineer's CC.

The three photos below show the clubhouse, the Greenkeeper's cottage, and a not too revealing aerial view of the course. As you can see in the aerial view, the course spanned the a section of lower island ( south of  Jamestown), touching Narragansett Bay on the west and Mackerel Cove on the east.  It was bisected north to south by Beavertail Rd., although I'm not sure that was the name of the road in 1925.

From an earlier thread:

And here's the one I found that's offers a fairly good view from 1939:

About 20 years ago Brad Faxon was brought in to restore the Beavertail Golf Course.  Unfortunately, funding fell through.  In the meantime the Conanicut Battery, dating back to the Revolutioary War, was restored and this was part of the golf course.  Good for historians, not so much for golfers.  BTW Jamestown does have a 9 hole course that is great fun and dates back to 1900 or so.
